Iran Must Finally Pay a Price
Wall Street Journal ^ | May 5, 2008 | Fouad Ajami

We tell the Iranians that the military option is "on the table." But three decades of playing cat-and-mouse with American power have emboldened Iran's rulers. We have played by their rules, and always came up second best.

Next door, in Iraq, Iranians played arsonists and firemen at the same time. They could fly under the radar, secure in the belief that the U.S., so deeply engaged there and in Afghanistan, would be reluctant to embark on another military engagement in the lands of Islam.

This is all part of a larger pattern. As Tehran has wreaked havoc on regional order and peace over the last three decades, the world has indulged it. To be sure, Saddam Hussein launched a brutal war in 1980 against his nemesis, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. That cruel conflict, which sought to quarantine the revolution, ended in a terrible stalemate; and it never posed an existential threat to the clerical state that Khomeini had built. Quite to the contrary, that war enabled the new rulers to consolidate their hold.

What’s the “price” the author is advocating?

but to be realistic there would be little the US military could do right now to harm iran. and they know that. ok the USAF is able to bomb Iran but then? iran would retaliate and this would hurt. there are no troops left to invade iran.

No invasion would be needed.

We don't want to rebuild Iran after we whack it....it can fester.

And if you think we don't have the firepower to cripple the regime... you are sadly mistaken.

Hopefully the same ultimatum Saddam Hussein Inc. got in 2003.

Perhaps thus:

"To the Revolutionary Council, the President, and the majlis (sp?)* currently operating as the government of the so-called "Islamic Republic of Iran":

Following are our terms. We will not deviate from them. There are no alternatives. We shall brook no delay.

You will, within 72 hours of receipt of this message, vacate and surrender the territory and population of Persia to the United States Occupation Authority.

We call upon the government of "Iran" to proclaim immediately the unconditional surrender of all Persian-based armed forces, and to provide proper and adequate assurances of their good faith in such action. The alternative for the government of the so-called "Islamic Republic of Iran" is prompt and utter destruction.

*This is by no means a complete list, but is intended to convey the general idea

sorry to disagree. i don´t think a bombing campain alone would achieve anything. Shure it would hurt iran badly but then iran has a population about 65 millions. and they would get really really mad for bombing their country. i would not want to be an american sodier stationed in iraq or afghanistan when up to 1 million fanatic soldiers and insurgents flood across the borders.

That doesn’t sound very likely to me, not even very workable.

A full-scale land invasion of Iran?

Who’s going to order it?

Where are the soldiers going to come from to follow that order?

Not to mention the fact that probably more than half of Iran hates the Mullahs... until we invade... then the Mullahs become the heroes.

Not exactly. Iran sits on top of a vast oil supply. However, they lack refining capacity and as a result they import gasoline. Stop the flow of gasoline into Iran and the country stops, too......

A full-scale land invasion of Iran?

Who said that?

Not I.

Much of my posts were quotes from the Potsdam Declaration to Japan. It was followed up by two B-29 flights on 6 and 9 August of that year. The land "invasion" did not begin until after the surrender, and was done in formation at quick time with weapons slung.

Who’s going to order it?

Not, W, not Her Thighness, and B. Hussein will actually try to surrender to them. I don't know if McCain has the glandular condition for it, or if he'd have to witness "nuclear 9/11" on his watch in order to grow 'em.

So, I don't have an answer for that one.

However, if you didn't notice it before, see my tagline, and ask yourself if one such as I can wait a bit longer.

true but this would be the point when geo political interests arrive at the scene. guess who buys all the oil from iran? EU and China. and you could be shure that neither EU nor China would be willing to stop driving around in cars because iran cannot supply us any longer because of an US attack. politics is dirt buisness.

A well placed Nuke in the center of Tehran might just do the trick.
At least get their attention. And if ya figure out how to do it anonymously it gets them to wondering who to go after.

correct but a preemtive nuke droped on a big city would let the whole world go crazy. this would be the day every country on this planet would start working in secret to get “the bomb”. because it would be the only way they can stay save. and i would not want to live on a planet where every regime has nuclear weapons especially not if it has been “my” nation who started this. i would not feel save any longer.
just my thoughts

“i would not want to be an american sodier stationed in iraq or afghanistan when up to 1 million fanatic soldiers and insurgents flood across the borders.”

The only weapon Iran has is terrorism. Their million poorly trained, poorly equipted soldiers would get mowed down quick. They fought a conventional war against Saddam for ten years and got nowhere.

yes but only a complete idiot would fight a conventional war against the US troops. urban fighting would be the key. and this would take a high death toll for the US troops too.

How would they move one million troops into urban areas without detection from the USAF? How would they maintain the supply lines? Do you believe they would have air superiority vs. U.S.?

I think the Administration has been listening to bad advice regarding Iran. But over the past year or so, the fog has slowly lifted and, it’s finally seeing more clearly and I think a consensus has been reached.
The Iranian regime will pay a price soon.
