McCain says he would veto farm bill Published: May 2, 2008 at 9:11 PM
DES MOINES, Iowa, May 2 (UPI) -- Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told an audience of Iowans that if he were president, he would veto a farm subsidy bill now making its way through Congress.
"I do not support it. I would veto it," McCain told the audience of about 250 people in Des Moines Thursday. "I would do that because I believe that these subsidies, the subsidies are unnecessary."
The Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee later told The Des Moines Register in an interview, "At this time, to have an increase in agricultural subsidies when farmers are having higher incomes than at any time in memory, I just think it's legislation that's not in keeping with the economic hard times of America where people are losing their homes and their jobs."
McCain said, however, he hoped voters in farm states such as Iowa would appreciate his plan to expand markets for U.S. agricultural products abroad, The Register reported Friday.
"I will open up every market in the world to the most efficient, productive sector of America's economy, and that's our farm and agricultural worker," he said.
It is my understanding that he has always been against ethanol subsidies which is why he did not do well in the Iowa caucus.
While McCain is right on this issue, it won’t get him many votes in my neck of the woods. Lots os “Conservative” voters around here who will forsake their values for farm subsidies.
I own a chain of car washes. It rained all winter. I lost 40% of my gross revenue.
I want subsidies too.
Where are Cougar and Willie for me?
Car washes are American as apple pie and tractors
Around here, it has been folks who have been “Democrats” all their lives - because their daddy, grand-daddy, and so on were Democrat.
Of course, when discussing issue they are 99.95% Conservative. They are often active church members in good, solid, conservative New Testament churches.
But when election season comes around, and the word is spread that the mean ol’ Republicans aim to destroy farming by eliminating farm subsidies and the wonderful and caring Democrats are going to give out even more in subsidies, they easily close their eyes and file away their conscience in the name of a government check.
That is how we got the super-liberal Blanche Lincoln here in Arkansas. She votes for every farm subsidy she can. Of course, the fact that she owns a great big farm in Eastern Arkansas and directly benefits from every vote she casts for farm programs... Nahh... no conflict of interest.
