One Reporter’s Opinion — Illegals Do Not Deserve Free Healthcare ( George Putnam )
newsmax.com ^ | April 17, 2008 | George Putnam

It is this reporter’s opinion that, after covering the invasion by illegal aliens over the past 40 years, it is difficult to find a story such as that related by Anna Gorman of the Los Angeles Times concerning illegal alien Ana Puente.

“Ana was an infant with a liver disorder when her aunt brought her illegally to the U.S. to seek medical care,” said Gorman.

The child underwent two liver transplants at UCLA Medical Center as a small child in 1989, and a third in 1998 — all totally paid for by the state of California.

Now it is reported that Puente has turned 21 and is due for another transplant. But she has aged out of her state-funded health insurance and is unable to continue to receive treatment at UCLA.

Her liver is failing again with her clinical course irreversible. Now we learn of a little-known option for a patient with certain healthcare needs such as hers.

Gorman says that if Puente notifies U.S. Citizenship and Immigration services that she is in the country illegally, state health officials may grant her full Medi-Cal coverage.

Puente has done so and has had her benefits restored. She currently awaits a fourth transplant at UCLA.

Puente shrugs this off saying UCLA should take care of her for the rest of her life, “because I’ve been there since I was a baby.”

With examples such as this, is it any wonder America faces financial bankruptcy with hospitals all over the nation closing while hardworking taxpayers pick up the cost?

Should illegals be the recipient of expensive transplant surgery? The tremendous cost of transplant surgery such as a liver transplant amounts to one-half million dollars, with additional post operative medical care, including the cost of anti-rejection medications, costing an estimate $30,000 annually.

Unfortunately transplants do not last a lifetime, the body will reject them sooner or later or the organs will fail again due to many factors (physical, environmental, etc).

I feel for this young woman, but I also feel for the person who gets bumped back on the list

I am happy you feel this way as well, that was precisely my point, it is a hard decision to take in this instance. Most of the people have retorted with a wide brush view of health care costs due to illegals, I was simply addressing this issue particulary :)

Stand by your views, you have every right. However, you have yet to show me where have I said what you have accused me I have stated but instead you have reacted and arrived at your own assertions about my stand. Deal with the cause, my friend, not the effect. This is when we will stop having illegals and deal with their ill effect due to their presence.

Cheers!

And again, I will point out that you raised issue with my being on a transplant committee because I believe that immigration status should be a factor in determining who gets these sorts of operations. If you want to repudiate what you wrote, that's fine too. But what other possible conclusion is someone supposed to reach when you say such a thing?

Mexico has doctors and hospitals. It’s time they spent their resources on improving their health care, instead of depending on US

The arrogant assertion that UCLA should take care of her for the rest of her life is detestable.

California deserves to go broke.

So what do we do? Make a choice on whose life is more important?

No, the way I understood it, it is some sort of lottery draw of sorts and/or a revolving waiting list for any type of transplants. Therefore after 2 transplants, she should be back in line like everybody else! Period! No special treatment whatsoever!

“California deserves to go broke?”

CA is inundated with illegal aliens because the present and past presidential administrations and bureaucracies have failed miserably to enforce the immigration laws and secure the borders, you say “California deserves to go broke” borders on moronic...I don't know where you learned logic but you need to return and get a refund. And from your screen-name, newbie, if you are actually a TN teacher, I feel sorry for your students!LMAO

Putnam is a champion on this issue. He began warning about illegal aliens over three decades ago.

Is this the same old fellow who used to have his own radio show?!

This is not what you said... You hinted I said that we should pay for illegals' healthcare which I never did. At least scroll down into your own posts before you start spinning.

Mexico has doctors and hospitals.

You are too broad on your assumptions. Cuba has them too but I wouldn't advise going there for healthcare (Moore might, but not I).

There is absolutely no lottery involved when it comes to a transplant list. The reason one can be on top of such list is decided upon diminished quality of life due to chronic, progressive diseases, if they are at higher risk of death while on the waiting list or comorbid medical conditions. There is no special treatment involved, despite your conclusions.

I don’t think I’d question another’s logic or professional competence over a simple difference of opinion, especially while using such fractured syntax.

By the way, newbie or not, I think (opinion only) that sanctuary status invites attendant economic burdens.

For the record, I teach my debate team that ad hominem attack is fallacious logic that usually, and should, result in a loss.

“difference of opinion?”

I repeat:
CA is inundated with illegal aliens because the present and past presidential administrations and bureaucracies have failed miserably to enforce the immigration laws and secure the borders, you say “California deserves to go broke”

if you think that’s just a “difference of opinion” then you have a lot more problems than just “logic” deficiency!

‘if you think that’s just a “difference of opinion” ‘. . .

I do. It is my opinion that any individual or government who does not exercise fiscal restraint and responsibility invites and deserves economic woes.

My opinion. I do not begrudge yours.

The federal bureaucracy has not enforced existing law, but states have some limited power. Becoming sanctuaries surely isn’t the only response. However, if the voters within a state elect to designate their state as a sanctuary, they agree to take on a greater tax burden.

Look, we passed Proposition 187, only to have it eviscerated by the courts. Many local entities throughout the state took their "cue" from that landmark ruling. It laid the foundation for the "sanctuary movement" in our state.

The majority of cities and towns here in California are not actually "sanctuary cities".

Furthermore, the Ninth Circuit struck down the DHS's attempt to go after firms/companies that hire illegals,- via the "no match letters" (SSN's). This would have allowed employers to actually verify an individual's current immigration status. Absolutely ridiculous.

The problem with illegals will have to be solved through joint efforts between the Feds and the individual states.

And you still haven't given a coherent reason why this illegal immigrant should be provided with a fourth liver at age 21 by the U.S..
