To me, the claim of historic inequities and false assumptions makes sense.

Good to see a private organization doing something about it.

Obviously, John Cruzat, USA Swimming's diversity specialist, makes a big bucks doing racial huckstering. Most all "diversity, inc" businesses are creations fed by the Sharpton/Jackson/Feminist Coalition.

In two hundred years, it's still White Man's fault that Blacks don't teach their children to swim?

Bring back Major Lewis -- egads, his theory was that white slave traders were tossing slaves to the sharks enroute by ship to America..... And so the route became known as the "impoverished shark food handout" route.

Wright must have another modified "Hope" poster with a Black Child in swim suit sitting atop the world with sharks grinning around the orb the child is wretchedly sitting on.

My whole life, I've never been in a pool or swimming where blacks have NOT been present.

Not teaching ANY child to swim, hobbles and handicaps that child.

Maybe blacks avoid the water, because they believe that loony black congress critter who claimed that sharks STILL roamed the slave ship routes - due to the millions of dead slaves through overboard..

Sounds like a good idea.

Another problem I see among many kids is that most public pools no longer have a deep end due to LIABILITY!!!!!

Thus, the vast majority of kids no longer ever experience swimming in water over their heads in a controlled situation. Thus, if they ever get into a deep water situation in the water, they are more likely to panic.

Boy Scouts changes that dynamic. To reach a certain lower rank, the scout must jump into water over his head, swim 25 feet, turn, swim back and float.

The swim test entails a crawl stroke for 75 yards, turn, any stroke for 75 yards and I think tread water. If they can’t do that, they cannot take part in any waterfront activities.

My son was afraid to swim although he loved playing in the shallow end. The threat of not advancing as a scout got him to jump in and swim. Now, he loves it.

What percentage of Black kids can’t read at grade level or drop out of high school. I think that should be a higher priority than swimming lessons.

“The non-swimming rate for Hispanic children was almost as high — 56 percent”

Very puzzling since most of their parents swam the Rio Grande.

If you want black kids to learn to swim start offering big bucks for swimming competitions. Make it into a sport where you can make a living and watch how fast the interest rises. How many black kids are into badminton, shuffleboard, or curling?

Has anyone ever thought they don’t swim simply because they have no interest in swimming?

I was in the navy and took water survivor courses with black guys.

White guys can take a big breath lean back and float, on the other hand as described by one of my friends, “brothers sink”.

Teaching a child how to swim is very important. Sure, it’s tough, more so if the child is afraid of water.

I think one would be negligent NOT to teach their child how to swim. It’s an important survival skill as one never knows where life will take them.

Most schools having swimming pools and offer Red Cross lessons for a minimal fee. We taught our son how to swim ourselves, then refined his skills through the RC training.

It helps to have a kid who takes like a fish to water. Swimming is one of our son’s greatest joys.

They could’ve surveyed me over 20 years ago. Very few of the blacks in my boot camp company could swim - I’m talking 10-20% here. I never bothered to learn to swim when I was living in the inner city either - you don’t need to swim to play in the city pool or under a fire hydrant. I didn’t learn to swim until I moved out of the city. It couldn’t have been whitey’s fault since I’m whitey.

What is it with the 58% today? First this thread:

58% Say Obama Denounced Wright for Political Convenience, not Outrage

and now this one. Is it because there is a Black candidate running this year?

New study: 58 percent of black children can't swim
