“Death penalty over Iraq killing”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq has been sentenced to death for the killing of the Chaldean Catholic Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho.

The archbishop of the northern city of Mosul was kidnapped in February by gunmen who attacked his car, killing his driver and two bodyguards.
His body was found in a shallow grave two weeks later.

The Iraqi government said the criminal court had imposed the death sentence on Ahmed Ali Ahmed, known as Abu Omar.

The US embassy in Baghdad welcomed the verdict.”

“’Indict Ahmadinejad for Inciting Genocide’”
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com International Editor
May 19, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(CNSNews.com) - As the U.S. election campaign revisits the question of whether an American president should meet unconditionally with heads of hostile regimes, a drive to haul the Iranian leader before an international court may be picking up steam.

More than two years after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad began publicly calling for Israel’s demise and questioning the veracity of the Holocaust, at least one government says it is looking seriously at the legal options that may be available.

Last week, Ahmadinejad stepped up his rhetoric, greeting the Jewish state’s 60th birthday commemorations by declaring on state television that “death and annihilation” awaited Israel.

The Australian government says it is taking legal advice on whether a case could be brought against the Iranian president before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in a television interview called Ahmadinejad’s statements “appalling by any standards of current international relations” and “an incitement to international violence.”

Rudd said it was important for the international community to be united in its condemnation of Ahmadinejad’s remarks. They went beyond mere hyperbole, and could have a “roll-on effect across the Islamic world to those who listen to Iran for their guidance,” he said.

President Bush, too, in recent days has warned against ignoring or taking lightly such threatening statements.

“When a leader of Iran says they want to destroy Israel, you’ve got to take those words seriously,” he said in a weekend NBC News interview.”

“Threats to America”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned in a major speech yesterday that the United States is facing the danger of defeat today similar to Britain in the early days of World War II.

U.S. military, economic and intellectual power is eroding as threats are growing and both Republican and Democrat leaders are deficient, Mr. Gingrich said. The five “greatest strategic threats” to the country, he said, are China’s rise, a resurgent autocratic Russia, radical Islam, rogue regimes seeking weapons of mass murder, and the growth of an anti-democratic system led by a “bureaucratic international elite.””

Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Local residents turned in a variety of munitions to Iraqi Army soldiers in the New Baghdad district of Baghdad May 17.

The munitions were taken to a nearby Joint Security Station for disposal.
