NEW YORK (AP) -- After three decades of keeping mum, Barbara Walters is disclosing a past affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, whom she remembers as "exciting" and "brilliant."
Appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air Tuesday, Walters shares details of her relationship with Brooke that lasted several years in the 1970s, according to a transcript of the show provided to The Associated Press.
A moderate Republican from Massachusetts who took office in 1967, Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the Senate. Both he and Walters knew that public knowledge of their affair could have ruined his career as well as hers, Walters says.
At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising star in TV news and co-host of NBC's "Today" show, but would soon jump to ABC News, where she has enjoyed unrivaled success. Her affair with Brooke, which never before came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a third term in 1978.

Which were....? You piqued my curiosity!
Kiss and tell seems all the rage now..Very bad form.
Shame on her.
This is the liberals way of thinking.
Indeed.
Her attitude is reminiscent of the Kennedys' attitude.
Successful white chicks for successful black guys ... it’s OK now ... Bahbwah said so.
So Brooke got Fidel Castro’s “Sloppy Seconds.”
Or because she's getting ready to exploit the Paris Hilton Video route to greater fame and fortune.
That’s exactly why she’s disclosing it now.
Actually it was another CIA plot to get Castro. Had he not held onto her shoulders he would have fallen in.
Why not let sleeping dogs lie? Why bring this out 3 decades later, for what purpose, what good?
Democrat,slut,home-wrecker.
I believe it was rumors of this affair that enabled Kerry to knock him off.
Let me guess, John Warner.
Bahbwa was ashamed because her SISTER had a speech impediment???????
Does this make her the first Black woman newscaster? Like Clinton being the first Black President?
Off topic but now that I think of it, it’s pretty funny that Clinton loved that title, and now he and Hillary are being thrown under the bus for a Black candidate. Bwaha.
excuse me while I go burn that from my minds eye
Of course it is. It all fits in the promotion.
Brooke was beaten by Paul Tsongas in 1978. You think his affair with Barbara was an issue?
I do remember that 1978 election night and Barbara was talking with the newly re-elected Sen Chuck Percy and congratulating him while all he wanted to do was lament over the defeat over his good friend Ed Brooke. Barbara was actually a little embarrassed. Maybe she wanted to just change the subject.
Of course 6 years later “RINO” Percy also was defeated for re-election.
