NEW YORK (AP) -- After three decades of keeping mum, Barbara Walters is disclosing a past affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, whom she remembers as "exciting" and "brilliant."
Appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air Tuesday, Walters shares details of her relationship with Brooke that lasted several years in the 1970s, according to a transcript of the show provided to The Associated Press.
A moderate Republican from Massachusetts who took office in 1967, Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the Senate. Both he and Walters knew that public knowledge of their affair could have ruined his career as well as hers, Walters says.
At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising star in TV news and co-host of NBC's "Today" show, but would soon jump to ABC News, where she has enjoyed unrivaled success. Her affair with Brooke, which never before came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a third term in 1978.

Do you stay up and watch TMZ too? ;o)
What a shame she just couldn’t keep this to herself (and the likely small circle who already know about it).
When Brooke ran for Senate my family was pretty excited (in their low-key way) to have a Republican they could vote for as Senator.
When I was a kid Barbara Walters was in a class by herself- since she went to the view she’s got no class at all..
So? My problem isn't with interracial dating or sex, my problem is with the term "jungle fever," which is the kind of antiquated racist language that wouldn't have been appropriate in polite society in 1865, let alone 2008.
Just take a walk through my downtown and see all the fat white sluts wih drugdealer boyfriends.
Black men = drug dealers
White women who have sex with black men = fat sluts
What century are you living in, exactly?
It may be obsolete to you.
“The Trumpet of a Strumpet”, you should give her this as a suggested title for her next tell all book.
That’s funny.
As many times as that’s been posted here as a funny line (I’ve done it, too), in this case, it’s particularly funny.
True. And a lousy journalist as well.
She slept with one black, powerful man -- thereby simultaneously assuaging her guilt and fulfilling her desires.
I'm just not getting how you know her motives. Maybe she simply slept with Brooke because she was attracted to him and had no moral compunction about sleeping with a married man? What does his being black have to do with anything? Brooke was a handsome politician who had affairs with many women.
Ok, fine. I don't use "jungle fever," nor do I use words like "nigger," "darky," etc. Forgive me for that slight.
Indeed, pillow talk can be...smothering ;)
It’s actually the story in itself that lends the fact that he’s a black man. I’m sure he’s not the only bozo she took the robe off for but she brought him out because he’s black otherwise the AP would have just said he was a Senator.
Well yo ujust used the nigger, darky.
I grew up in an area where most of my friends were blacks, with names like Zip, Garbo, Ferguson, Regeland.
And I’ve heard them use such terms endlessly, I may not be PC and use what I refer to as Free Speech without concern of the speech police.
Twice?!
Jeez! Can’t take you anywhere, Laz.
bttt
Maybe Barbara just isnt a very good person.
Ya think?
LOLOL!! You are a sick puppy, but you amuse me nonetheless.
Very funny. I’m only here for the historical perspective, if you must know.
Lilly Von Scht--, er ah, I mean Baba Wawa to Hillary regarding Obama.
As we use to say at Cobra Barracks in the Philippines: GABRA (Give a Big Rat’s A$$).
