FLDS doctor denies abuse at YFZ Ranch |

The physician who cares for the polygamous community now in the national spotlight - and who has treated its prophet in a Utah jail - is described by his mentor as "very kind, very sensitive, very concerned." Lloyd H. Barlow, a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, graduated from the University of Utah's School of Medicine in 1995. He completed a one-year internship in internal medicine in 1996, and then did a family medicine residency at the U. that ended in 1999. Barlow oversees a health clinic in Hildale, the sect's traditional home base, and its Texas clinic at its YFZ Ranch. Texas authorities allege there is a pattern of sexual abuse of underage girls at the ranch; and on Wednesday an official said at least 41 children there have had broken bones. He also said young boys may have been sexually abused. Barlow flatly denies that any child abuse occurred at the ranch. "There is not," Barlow said. "The parents are very loving and caring parents, as I believe [Texas child welfare officials] could attest given the stresses put on them over the past three weeks and observing them. The parents are very much interested in the care and well-being of their children." He added: "It is part of our belief system that the way to teach and train children is to deal with them and train them in kindness." Physicians are legally required to report cases of suspected child abuse - something Barlow said he would have done if he found such evidence. Texas authorities would not comment Wednesday on whether investigations include whether anyone failed to report abuse of children at the ranch. Barlow said children with serious illnesses or injuries were treated at health care facilities outside the ranch, and police found receipts for such care, court records show. There have been no public complaints against Barlow or discipline by licensors in Utah or Texas. Physician Marc E. Babitz was Barlow's faculty supervisor during his residency program and worked with him at a now-closed family practice clinic in Salt Lake City. "He was really a very fine student and a very fine resident. He put the welfare of his patients as his top priority," said Babitz, who once visited Barlow at the Hildale clinic. He said he was once introduced to one of Barlow's wives. Until Barlow completed his medical degree, Hildale and the adjoining FLDS town of Colorado City, Ariz., had a single nurse practitioner to rely on. "He made a huge difference to health care in this area," said Joanne Yarrish, a certified nurse midwife in nearby Centennial Park. Barlow repeatedly visited then-ailing sect leader Warren S. Jeffs in the Washington County jail in the spring of 2007. Jeffs was awaiting trial and was later convicted of two first-degree felony counts of rape as an accomplice for his role in a 2001 spiritual marriage between a 14-year-old follower and her 19-year-old cousin. --- * JULIA LYON contributed to this report. |
“They provided false information, removed ID bracelets, rubbed the writing off them and switched children and in some reports even clothing in order to confuse the identities of children as well as their parentage or family group affiliation.”
WEll, I think that indicates they were all TAUGHT FROM BIRTH that they were GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE and would be subjected to the EVIL’s OUTSIDE the compound and must resist to protect the LOYAL INNER CIRCLE, and their families.
They were just protecting their faith, their beliefs, their way of ‘living’.
That said.... To what extremes were they willing to go to to protect those things?
Would they keep quiet, even if they knew there was abuse, sex with minors, scams off welfare, child labor????
Would they bury the evidence, if it came down to being caught?
“””...if I am pulled over for a traffic violation...””
Not an *alleged* traffic violation?
You surely do take great pride in being a scofflaw...how comforting.
God forbid you are ever abducted by a sex rapist/murderer and there’s no-one to help you.
“Even today if I am pulled over for a traffic violation and the officer asks me if I know why I was pulled over, I tell him that since he doesn’t know then maybe he should go back to his car. Of course I say it with a smile and it never works, but I have a 100% record in court. “
When I get pulled over, I tell the Officer the truth. I make no excuses, but just tell him the truth.
So far, it has worked 99% of the time. The only time I got a ticket (in the past 10 years) was because it was RADAR, in a SCHOOL ZONE, and I didn’t have my LICENSE on me at the time, and there was an open beer in the vehicle from the night before (I worked at a bar back then).
He gave me a ticket, and apologized for having to do so, and told me If I had to ‘hurry’, take a different route so I don’t go through the School Zone.
Based, at least, on our comparison of experiences.
Well what do we have here? A cult of ONE! What would you recommend?

New York Man Used Voodoo Threats to Scare Teen Girls Into Rape ‘Rituals’
Thursday, May 01, 2008
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. A 51-year-old man who claimed to practice Voodoo has admitted telling underage girls that if they refused to have sex with him terrible things would happen to them and their families.
DiFiore said that at various times in 2006, Aviles told three girls, ages 16 and 14, that he could help them with such problems as boys and parents if they engaged in a sexual “ritual” with him. He warned that if they backed out, he would make bad things happen to them and their relatives.
What kind of "parents" are these, period?

When I was in High School I was filming a physics experiment and I happened to film two cop cars (complete with great face shots) running a stop sign. The same stop sign that the cops loved to use to write tickets to the students. So a group of us took the film to the local JP. To make a long story short I was the only member of the group that still had a drivers license a year later.
God forbid you are ever abducted by a sex rapist/murderer and theres no-one to help you.
What is the saying, when seconds count the police are only minutes away. Police aren't even required to protect you. When was the last time you heard of the police preventing a rape or murder.
By the way, I haven't had a ticket in 20 years and I seriously doubt that any of the local cops would give me a ticket, unless I asked them to. I used to be an EMT, do Search and Rescue with them, etc, etc.
“When was the last time you heard of the police preventing a rape or murder.”
The last time, was when the LE and CPS raided the YFZ Ranch.
At least the most public, if not the most recent.
So, what you are saying is that you get away with violating the law (traffic violations, to be specific), because you have ‘friends’ in the Local PD?
I guess the FLDS can be considered "liberal" mormons for not forcing their children to use the "Deseret Alphabet". Imagine how much MORE isolated they would be if they could couldn't read or write english...Just as Brigham young intended.
Wow - you are pompous too!
I think that’s one of the most horrifying scenes on film. I get your comparison.
What good is the good old boy network if it doesn't protect the good old boys? LOL Trust me I know what I am talking about when it comes to the abuse of power by those in charge. I have seen it first hand.
The reality is that aside from very minor speeding violations (I sold my Porsche) I don't break many laws.
I don’t doubt that. It’s just that I wonder if that’s enough experience for him to be competent if he’s the sole medical provider for that group. Would that qualify him to handle the wide range of medical problems he could encounter?
Just the old FAMILY tree....(snort!)
And now they're trying to prevent rape, murder and abuse and you're condemning them.
Damned if they do and damned if they don't.
The last time, was when the LE and CPS raided the YFZ Ranch.
Two things come to mind. One, do you equate the CPS with the police and two, why did the police wait so long? Why didn't they do it years ago? And who did the police arrest for rape and murder?
From the way you're bragging, I don't doubt it.
“Trust me I know what I am talking about when it comes to the abuse of power by those in charge. I have seen it first hand.”
So, do you always assume that, in any ‘action’ by authorities, that it is always done because of an abuse of power?
Yeah, but not too sure about the “trust” part. ;)
