Schwarzenegger: Junkets help small-town legislators (Simple folks need to learn from China...)

Don't blame small-town legislators for taking junkets.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Wednesday it's good for lawmakers "from those little towns" to go out in the world and see worldly things like "an airport," "a highway that maybe has 10 lanes" or even "a highway on top of a highway."

The Republican governor, speaking at a conference with billionaire Michael Milken on infrastructure, said he has benefited by riding high-speed trains in France and China, which gave him more inspiration to support such projects in California. His comments on small-town legislators drew laughs and applause from the big-city audience at the Beverly Hilton.

“And that’s why I always encourage the legislators in Sacramento, because some of them come from those little towns," Schwarzenegger said. "You know what I’m saying? They come from those little towns, and they don’t have that vision yet of an airport or of a highway that maybe has 10 lanes. ...

(snip)

"I think it’s great when they go to Russia and they go to China and they go to Africa," he added. "They go to the Middle East and they go to Canada and they go to all different places around the world to get education and to learn what those places do. Because we don’t have to redesign the wheel all the time. We can go and copy other people."

Being from a “small” town in California myself, I’ve got a good mind to fire up the kerosene lamp, grab my quill pen and dash off a missive to the governor. Except I’ve got to go milk the cows first. Besides, it takes forever to hitch up the team and drive my buggy over to the nearest Pony Express station.

It might prove difficult to pry the slack-jawed yokels off their stumps and away from their porcelain jugs of fermented corn-squeezings long enough to go on a junket. /sarc.

Typical liberal mentality that rural small town life is like Mayberry in the 1950s.

What's this animus urban politicians have against those living in small towns and rural communities? First Obama and now Red Arnold! The urban elite doesn't really get Middle America - or Middle California!

Yeah. What do people do in a one stoplight town? Answer: they race through it. Mine has two on the main road and no, its not in California.
