A woman who claimed that she is allergic to her ex-husband's cat cannot prevent their two children from visiting their father's home, a Long Island, N.Y., judge has ruled.

How does this woman live??? The whole world is filled with people who own cats.
Easy solution. Put a clothes washer and shower stall in the back yard.
CAT FIGHT!!
Hmmm....
Too easy.
She idolizes Heather Mills.

I view allergists as total quacks and charlatans. Must have had at least a dozen of them tell my mother I was allergic to cats when I was a child; if I were allergic to cats, I’d be dead. My life now includes more cats and fewer allergists.
Take a Benadryl lady!
But on a serious note...cat allergies do exist.I know because I have one.In fact, after a few months of "babysitting" a cat awaiting placement I got to the point where I could barely breathe. After the cat's departure (and a thorough cleaning of my place) everything was fine.
I don't think the kids should be denied the chance to see their father but I think that,if need be,he could reasonably be ordered to get rid of the cat.
If I were the judge, I’d order the woman to buy a cat and learn to deal with it.
My allergist told me I was severely allergic to cats, and I’ve even slept in the same bed as two cats before, and no problem at all for me, at all, ever. But then again, apparently the skin tests they do have slightly different reactions (like if a cat bit me, I’d probably have a reaction from the saliva on the broken skin).
The father should “reasonably” send a beloved pet to a future that probably includes euthanasia because you're allergic to “some” cats? The mother on the other hand only developed her “allergy” after the gravy train stopped. Wow.
People die from allergic episodes.I saw it during my 20 years of working in a big hospital’s ER.Is the mother playing a game here? Possibly. But if her allergic episodes can be documented then I think getting rid of the cat is a viable option (of last resort).
I find that extremely difficult to believe.
Does my tag make me look fat? Or just dyslexic?
I don't know if my case is typical but I seem to have no problem around some cats but a serious problem around others.Either the mother is playing a game here (a distinct possibility) or she has a genuine medical problem (also distinctly possible).Allergies *do* exist. In the most serious cases, admissions to ICU's and even deaths can occur. As I said earlier,I've seen it.
Unless you have a medical degree perhaps you'd be wise to refrain from assuming the mother's a clown until you've seen the (medical) evidence.
Actually, owning a cat is supposed to suppress the allergen.
Oh yeah I second the take a Benadryl argument.
From Wiki.

Allergic reactions to cat dander and/or cat saliva inspire one of the most common reasons people cite for disliking cats. Some humans who are allergic to catstypically manifested by hay fever, asthma or a skin rashquickly acclimate themselves to a particular animal and live comfortably in the same house with it, while retaining an allergy to cats in general.[46] However, this should not be depended upon.
Many humans find the rewards of cat companionship outweigh the discomfort and problems associated with these allergens. Some cope with the problem by taking prescription allergy medicine, along with bathing their cats frequently (weekly bathing will eliminate about 90% of the cat dander present in the environment). There are also attempts to breed cats that are less likely to provoke an allergic reaction.
