By playing off Wright, he can recapture his identity as the personification of white hopes for a color-blind politics rather than white fears of anti-American and anti-white public figures.

Morris is right on the money here. This is a moment of great crisis for Obama, but it's possible he could turn it in his---and, at some level, the nation's---favor. As I have said on other threads, if through this Obama ends up taking these racist hate-mongers out---and only someone like Obama can do it at this point in history---that would be wonderful for the nation.

Wright et al. actually cannot allow Obama to succeed, precisely because his very success undermines their lucrative hate industry that claims that it is the white man keeping the black man down. Obviously, that is false for all to see if millions of Typical White People vote for Obama and even put him in the White House.

These racists have been able to marginalize other successful blacks (Rice, Powell, etc.) b/c they were not elected. But Obama's very existence demonstrates that the way to "liberation" is the same for all Americans---go to school, get a job, get out and make something of yourself. Obama is the living, breathing Anti-Black Liberation Theology. In short, Obama is too white for these racists. Based on Wright's despicable performance this week, and Sharpton saying Obama's admonition not to foment violence in NYC was tantamount to "Obama dancing with the white folk," it's obvious that the BLT racists will NEVER allow a black person to reach the White House. They know very well that no person espousing their garbage has a chance in hell of being a viable national candidate. They also know very well that any person who is not an adherent to their views is "mainstream," i.e., post-racial, and that threatens their livelihood and their ability to have million dollar homes in all-white gated golf communities. If Wright comes out swinging after Obama's speech, and he's likely to, Obama will have no choice but to go to full-scale war against him. I say "good." Someone has to take these racists to task and Obama is uniquely situated to do so. I would hate to see Obama as our President because I vehemently disagree with his politics. But if his run and the way he handles this hate-mongering ultimately moves our country forward to a post-racial era, rather than setting it back, for that I'd be very grateful.

Good points but how do you know that it really isn’t a calculated move on Obama’s part - that he really does go along w/ Wright and Sharpton and they are attacking him with his full approval to hide the fact that he does? Just a rather paranoid thought....
