TOKYO, April 30 (AP) - (Kyodo)Ling Ling, a male giant panda at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo, died early Wednesday morning, zoo officials said.
He was 22 years and seven months old, equivalent to about 70 human years. Since the cause of his death is unknown, the zoo will conduct an autopsy on the panda, the officials said.
Ling Ling, born in Beijing Zoo in China in 1985, was the only giant panda in Japan who belonged to Japan.
He was given to Ueno Zoo in 1992 in exchange for a Japan-born panda to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral ties.
He died just after the zoo stopped his public viewing Tuesday, explaining that he had suffered decreased heart and kidney functions due to old age and that he would undergo intensive care.

Ling-Ling, the female half of the National Zoo’s fuzzy and beloved pair of rare giant pandas, died suddenly yesterday of unknown causes. She was 23, the oldest of her kind living in captivity outside China.

Looks like Japan will have to go back to renting pandas from China at $1m per panda per year.

Since the cause of his death is unknown, the zoo will conduct an autopsy on the panda, the officials said. The AP reporter should know better, you can't perform an autopsy on an animal, it's a necropsy.
