The chief of US drug maker Baxter International says that its Chinese-made blood thinner heparin, which has been linked to dozens of deaths, appears to have been deliberately contaminated.
"We are greatly concerned that our heparin products appears to be the target of a deliberate adulteration scheme," Baxter chief executive Robert Parkinson said in prepared remarks to a US Congress panel.
...Mr Parkinson said it was clear the contaminant, an altered form of chondroitin sulfate, was added before crude heparin material reached Baxter's supplier in China, Scientific Protein Laboratories LLC (SPL).
SPL, in separate testimony, also said the contamination appeared to be deliberate.
Using the altered chondroitin sulfate is less expensive than real heparin, leading to concern that it was used as a cheaper substitute for the drug.

Summer Olympics 2008, Goons and Junk!
Remember the good old days when prescriptions were a few dollars and were made entirely in the USA? There ought to be a patients strike to punish these greedy drug companies that buy cheap poison from China and charge exorbitant prices to the patient.
Congress can regulate the life out of anything made here but doesn’t seem to check on products made abroad. Curious. Wonder how many honorable congressman were paid off.
The inscrutable Chinese strike again. Made in China continues to take on a whole new meaning. Use to mean junk, now it means poison. I guess the ol adage you get what you paid for rings true.
I'm all for the "made entirely in the USA" part but with the $4 cash generics at Walmart and others we're back to the few dollars. However, more exotic maladies require a massive amount of R&D that will never permit sales prices of a few dollars (unless all drug purchases are socialized in which case you'll pay much more through other channels). Not sure if you're kidding about the patients' strike -- I certainly wouldn't be capable of doing that -- would be doubled up in pain if not actually undergoing a stroke.
Dun-dun-duuuuuuuuuun!
Baxter has total responsibility and will pay. The only thing the lawyers will talk about is not if but how much.
Let’s look at the upside - no telling how many people’s joints felt better before they bled to death or something ugly like that.

Thought you’ll like this graphic.
I had back surgery last summer and I had to do a week’s worth of IV antibiotics at home afterward, and you flush the IV with a small dose of heparin to keep it from clotting. It was Baxter but it wasn’t in the time frame of this incident, but still this whole thing is infuriating.
their new corporate logo...
That is a great graphic, Winged Hussar. Got it saved and won't link to it.
That was before medicare. When the government is paying the price the price will always go up.
The insanity has got to stop.
add this to the insanity list which is long and getting longer
Altered chondroitan sulfate. Just flipping great. Perhaps I should check my chondroitan sulfate.
Chinese deliberately contaminating heparin that is destined for the USA. Could that be considered an “Act of War”?
Ping.
No surprises. Folks think I’m crazy, but I think they’ve been trying to kill us for a while.
