Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan spoke for over two hours at Monday's Million Man March, telling hundreds of thousands on the Mall in Washington that white supremacy is the root of the country's suffering ( 199K AIFF sound or 199K WAV sound).
"That makes you sick," Farrakhan said, "and you produce a sick society and a sick world."
The response to his call for a day of atonement and reconciliation for black men strengthened his position as a leader in the African American community, Farrakhan said, "like it or not." Mall at 1 pm
The U.S. Park Service estimated that 400,000 heard Farrakhan and other speakers in the all-day rally.
And while Farrakhan may have been the inspiration for Monday's Million Man March, he wasn't necessarily the reason huge numbers of people showed up. In interviews with CNN, several African-American participants said they hoped the rally would generate self-reliance and black unity. "We're not here to overthrow anyone," said John West, an educator from Chicago.

There never was a million men there! 400,000 tops!
I remember that speech. Professor Irwin Corey would have been proud to produce such gibberish.
It’s not whitey that’s keeping the brutha’s down, it’s Farrakhan and the other two poverty pimps. Why? Because keeping blacks poor, angry and uneducated is good for bidness. If MLK could come back to earth for one hour, he would spend the entire time choking the crap out of those three SOB’s.
Does anyone know if Obama went to that? AND, has anyone ever found a picture of Obama and Farrakhan together? I don’t scour threads and miss things.
I have read that he (Obama) was an attendee.
I have no time to look for a link.
I will leave it up to others.
“he would spend the entire time choking the crap out of those three SOBs.”
He could add a few others and would.
Thanks, I wasn’t sure of that. I have done searches for pictures of them together on Google with no results. I may follow the links on this as there were more links on that site.
Obama Marched with Farrakhan

Lots of readers emailed about this one, an article from 1995 in the Chicago Reader that confirms Barack Obama did take part in Louis Farrakhans Million Man Marchin his own words: Chicago Reader: What Makes Obama Run?
Obama took time off from attending campaign coffees to attend Octobers Million Man March in Washington, D.C. His experiences there only reinforced his reasons for jumping into politics.
What I saw was a powerful demonstration of an impulse and need for African-American men to come together to recognize each other and affirm our rightful place in the society, he said. There was a profound sense that African-American men were ready to make a commitment to bring about change in our communities and lives.
But what was lacking among march organizers was a positive agenda, a coherent agenda for change. Without this agenda a lot of this energy is going to dissipate. Just as holding hands and singing We shall overcome is not going to do it, exhorting youth to have pride in their race, give up drugs and crime, is not going to do it if we cant find jobs and futures for the 50 percent of black youth who are unemployed, underemployed, and full of bitterness and rage. ...
This doesnt suggest that the need to look inward emphasized by the march isnt important, and that these African-American tribal affinities arent legitimate. These are mean, cruel times, exemplified by a lock em up, take no prisoners mentality that dominates the Republican-led Congress. Historically, African-Americans have turned inward and towards black nationalism whenever they have a sense, as we do now, that the mainstream has rebuffed us, and that white Americans couldnt care less about the profound problems African-Americans are facing.
But cursing out white folks is not going to get the job done. Anti-Semitic and anti-Asian statements are not going to lift us up. Weve got some hard nuts-and-bolts organizing and planning to do. Weve got communities to build.

Thanks.
Crowd numbers are routinely hyped because the organizers figure no one can really challenge them.
The Rose Bowl parade claims one million attendance each year, yet you couldn’t fit that number along the parade route, it’s closer to 100,000.
The Fiesta Bowl Parade does the same thing, claims 400,000 when the real attendance is actually 15,000!
Then of course, you have Al Gore - Remember he repeatedly stated that TWO BILLION participated in “Live Earth” worldwide. The actual stats from TV ratings, Internet stats, and concert attendance show something less than 40 million - that’s TWO PERCENT of the total he claimed..
He was only 1960,000,000 short of his claimed total....
Glad to help out.
I was there. Me, a big white Jewish guy. It was a nice event but I still don’t what know what Faraklan was talking about when he talked about “the mother ship” coming down from space.
No way that there were a million people there. I’ll go with the 250-400,000 figures because I couldn’t see the whole mall area. However, the people were not packed tightly together.
By the way, did you know that Prof. Irwin Corey, the master of gibberish, has been a hardcored Communist Party member/supporter since at least the 1950’s, if not earlier?
Sadly, this is true. Perhaps he inhaled too much chalk dust in his act.
