People don't worship the wall. They worship at the wall. Christians also do not worship churches. In theory, that is true. Yet, the way people react when these places get destroyed, or occupied by another country, suggests to me that at some level the walls themselves at some level become and object of worship.

Yeah, but this is the Middle East we're talking about here. Destroy the buildings and they'll fight over wall remnants. Take away the walls, and they'll fight over dirt.
Ultimately it's the people, not the stuff.

So right. As Scripture says:
John 4:21-24 Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”

So, when Jews go to say prayers over the graves of their mothers and fathers, are they praying to the stones and dead bodies?

If the venue your favorite sports team plays at was destroyed or occupied by that team's rival how would you react?
If the Washington Monument was destroyed or occupied by Iran, how would you react?
