There are other “voice changer” software out there, but they’re just toys.
Melodyne is the real deal, hardcore professional audio manipulation tool.
It’s what the pros use, and it’s not even that expensive.
BTW, Melodyne Uno does all you need for voice manipulation, and is the cheapest version. It’s only $199.
I have looked at the software to do singing voices for parody songs. It is about $200. Does the one you recommend do both?
Can it change my voice to actually sound like I can carry a tune?
Yes.
What it does is lays audio out like MIDI, auto-detecting pitch and tempo. You can the auto-correct pitch, drag individual notes around to change the melody, drag notes/words to change the timing, and it does it all to sound natural and seamless. Pitch changes as “formant correct” which means you can raise the pitch up and not sound like a munchkin. You just sound like you were hitting a higher note.
You can also edit the formants separately, changing the perceived age and gender of your voice. To sound female you would pitch shift up, and also shift the formants up separately. To sound big and tough, you do the opposite.
To sound like you can sing in tune, just auto correct and drag any out of key notes to the correct pitch. You can also auto correct your timing.
It’s every famous pop-singer’s secret weapon. Seriously.

Will it take me a year to learn how to use it?
No, it shouldn’t take long at all. You just need to open a .wav file in it, use the auto-correct buttons, and start dragging notes. The only thing to learn really is how to switch from pitch to formant editing, which should have a formant tool button to click, or maybe select it from the drop-down menu (not sure exactly in Melodyne Uno). Then you see formants displayed as horizontal bars on top of the audio wave forms which you can drag up or down. Formants are like the timbre of a voice. It’s what allows use to determine the size, age, gender of the person. By raising or lowering them, you can change the perception of those qualities.
That’s about all there is to know. I suspect in less than an hour you’ll be using it like a pro.
