Arizona sheriff stirs furor with crackdown on illegals

GUADALUPE, Ariz. (AP) - The self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff in America" has been making forays into Phoenix and nearby Guadalupe and sweeping up illegal immigrants, drawing howls of protest from the cities' mayors and other community leaders.

While Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has legal authority to enforce the law in cities within his county, politicians and activists are accusing him of grandstanding and, worse, racial profiling.

A total of 150 people—73 of them illegal immigrants—were arrested by Arpaio's deputies in the raids on heavily Hispanic sections in late March and early April.

"I was upset. We did not request them here," said Guadalupe Mayor Rebecca Jimenez, who charged that the patrols were meant to raise Arpaio's profile for his re-election campaign this year.

Guadalupe, a community of about 6,000 people that relies on the sheriff's office for police protection, is taking steps to find another department to patrol its streets.

As for Phoenix, Mayor Phil Gordon said Arpaio should be concentrating on more pressing duties such as finding people with warrants against them, and he has asked for a federal civil rights investigation, complaining the sheriff is singling out people who are "driving with a broken taillight or have brown skin." The U.S. Justice Department refused to comment.

And in Mesa, Arizona's third-largest city, the police chief has requested two days' notice of any sweeps Arpaio might conduct there, so that his officers can be prepared for any unrest.

Arpaio has long had a reputation for in-your-face tactics. He is known for making jail inmates wear pink underwear, assigning them to old- style chain gangs, and serving them green bologna sandwiches.

It kind of makes you wonder what other laws the mayors of these cities are “overlooking”?

I'm amazed people are outraged over people being arrested for breaking the law. Wonders will never cease.

LOL! This libtard Mayor thinks the Sheriff should only enforce the laws she requests them to.

It looks like it depends who you ask.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office
Joe Arpaio, Sheriff
News Brief

April 24, 2008
Illegals Ask Sheriff’s Office For A Ride Home to Mexico(Phoenix, AZ) In a strange turn of events, four illegal aliens seeking but not finding employment in Maricopa County, approached a Sheriff’s deputy and asked to be returned home to Mexico.

The illegals admitted to the deputy that had recently entered the U.S. illegally and were in the Aguila area, west of Phoenix, seeking work. A Human Smuggling unit detective trained in immigration matters was called to the scene and processed the four men. Customs officials then took them back to Mexico.

The Aguila area has seen a flurry of law enforcement assistance by the Sheriff’s Office recently. Deputies have been asked by residents there to have a stronger presence in the community because of the problems related to illegal immigration there.

These mayors are not looking to enforce laws the are looking for votes. They are just like used car salesman. I’ve got to make this sale, can’t afford the payments, no problem, you can just put it on your credit card. What we need is 10,000 more sheriffs just like him.

Arpaio is the man. I hear a lot of the lib morons in southern Arizona blasting him on TV and the radio. I heard one clueless ‘tard say that Arpaio came to Phoenix to get a high paying job and that he has never done anything in his life. Obviously, the illiterate broad who made that remark has never read “America’s Toughest Sheriff.” The chapter about Arpaio chasing drug cartel guys around the mountains AFGHANISTAN at night is hilarious while at the same time demonstrating that not too much frightens Arpaio. If he can take on those guys, a bunch of liberal ‘RAT politicians aren’t going to scare him off. Go Joe!

Yep, they love him until his enforcement of the law interferes with what they want. I find it interesting they are calling him on "racial profiling", when it should be apparent to even a total idiot that most of the people who come across the southern border will be from a different country, I.E. Mexico.

I guess he should be busting people in business suits and who only speak English without an accent. I bet he would find a lot of border jumpers that way, huh? The MSM and left wing politicians(and this Mayor of obviously mexican decent)and so stupid they don't realize how phony the "racial profiling" line sounds when applied to Illegals and Islamic terrorists.

WOW

“but not finding employment in Maricopa County,” things must be looking up in Feenix now that the new law (employer sanctions law)

From another story
THere can be a downside

“Juan Carlos Ochoa, a naturalized U.S. citizen who lives in an upper-middle-class subdivision near Phoenix named Laguna Hills, can’t find a job because a government database classifies him as a possible illegal immigrant. Pauline Muñoz, a 39-year-old mother of six who was born in Phoenix, has been afraid to leave her apartment since being held by sheriff’s deputies for 15 hours for a driving infraction — an example of what she believes is racial profiling.”

My post was a question. If they object to the sheiff from enforcing a law, then perhaps there are others they do not want enforced.

Since I do not live in the area, I can not state which laws are being overlooked but if you don’t think small town mayors (or even big town mayors) don’t have some laws they don’t want enforced you are naive.

The very fact they are complaining indicates that they believe they have the “right” to determine which laws can be overlooked.
