Culture shock: Seized polygamous sect kids face tough adjustment
The Associated Press
Article Last Updated: 04/24/2008 07:32:33 AM MDT
Posted: 7:33 AM- SAN ANGELO, Texas - The hundreds of children from a polygamist compound taken into state custody are on their way to group homes, shelters and residences, but experts and lawyers fear their transition may be much harder than it is for other foster children.
The 437 children taken from the compound in West Texas will be plunged into a culture radically different from the community where they and their families shunned the outside world as a hostile, contaminating influence on their godly way of life.
Many of the children have seen little or no television. They have been essentially home-schooled all their lives. Most were raised on garden-grown vegetables and twice-daily prayers with family. They frolic in long dresses and buttoned-up shirts from another century.

"Warren Jeffs outlawed all toys. He also made the Colorado group kill their dogs, and banned fishing and the color red." It is also believed that he banned laughing, see my new tag line, courtesy of the Utah Attorney General's primer on FLDS.

"These families have the right to have their voices heard in the legal process," said TRLA attorney Robert Doggett. "The idea that these children can be taken away without giving their families the opportunity to address allegations and fight to stay together is absurd." The guy comes across as an idiot. It's never done this way. And does he have any idea what kinds of *families* he's talking about?

Thanks for starting a daily thread, Miz.
The thought occurred to me last night: since some of these kids are from Utah/Arizona/B.C., would their parents come to TX for DNA? Do the TX authorities have a list of all the adults on the ranch? Would they know if someone came from elsewhere?

What in particular did this church want to teach these kids? Can you be more specific?

the next 2 hours were spent teaching us how to convert these children to this particular churches beliefsYou really should put the details in writing and notify the court about this. Any home operated by a religious group should be required to have a substantial number of staffers who are not affiliated with the religious group, and all staffers should get clear instructions from the court and/or CPS that active proselytizing is prohibited and should be reported by any staffer who observes it.

But if they return the children, the compound will go on. If they return them and they do go back, it needs to be monitored. Nope, the compound will not go on. Unless they are being monitored 24/7, the children will simply disappear; shifted to some other remoter location, never to see civilization again.
Any hope for them at all, will be shattered.

They do not “convert”. That’s why the FLDS had to birth their followers. No one “converted” me to Christianity. I made the decision on my own.

It is also believed that he banned laughing,.... That wouldn't surprise me at all. We know he banned crying and how he did that.

” I dont think any religion should be forced on them”
FLDS was forced on them. No one is going to come close to that.

What a horrible thread that turned out to be. The gov’t haters/cult defenders are on it full force. Those kids would NOT have been better off left there.

That is exactly why no religion should be forced on them. If they were being raised the way it is reported, then they are already psychologically fragile and any attempt to convert them to another belief system now could do great and lasting harm. I hope child psychologists are a major part of this operation and will be working closely with the children and the caregivers.

“He has scrapped community and holiday celebrations from marking past leaders birthdays to Pioneer Day festivities along with dances, socials and other get-togethers
And people have been warned that laughter causes the spirit of God to leak from their bodies, amplifying an obscure tenet in Joseph Smiths Doctrine and Covenants.
We tried not to laugh, Draper said. We wondered How do we do this? Is there anyone who is going to make it?

This quote from #17 just chilled me to the bone. I wonder how many of these children who are returned to their parents (if they ever find them) will experience exactly what the writer says? No doubt they will have to be "decontaminated" after their exposure to the evil outside world. One shudders to think what THAT would entail.
The problem for this cult is, is that now that the kids have seen how things can be different, even like in a few toys and not having to work all the time, and being able to show emotion, the cults strangle hold on them is broken.
Even in the worst case scenario where they are sent back, it will be harder to keep them since they now know there are options. A little taste of freedom will go a long ways.

From your links it looks like it's confirmed that the informant was in this specific sect. Interesting that the informant never reported the underage pregnancies.

I’m really not sure why you posted this to me- it’s all rumor and speculation and doesn’t answer my questions at all. If this person witnessed the rape of anyone he should have reported it on the spot, I’m guessing he is assuming that and didn’t see it. Seeing the children working during the day is not in itself a bad thing- I worked all day nearly every day while growing up.
The point to me is not whether the children worked- but whether they were allowed to be children. I found a lot of pleasure in working as a child- some of my best memories are of working, but that may not have been the case with these children. Another poster said Jeffs banned toys, laughter, and dogs- so I think my question was answered if that is true it is aweful.
There are many children raised differently, and raised to work- I know people right now that have their children out working long hours at an early age- that in itself is not harmful in my opinion- it depends on whether they are allowed to be children in spirit, and what the rest of their childhood experiences are. I was raised very differently than most here and I had a great childhood- would not trade it for any other upbringing if I could.

“convert them to another belief system now could do great and lasting harm”
The problem is that too many people confuse “expose” with “convert”

Too many people are missing the point. Their religion IS the problem. We need to teach them that there are alternatives to religious slavery
