Sources said the man claimed to have taken the devices accidentally.

The old Sandy Burglar defense? The documents accidentally fell into my pant legs?

So if he had done this with the intent of spying, then return, no questions asked?

Probably. Slight chance that he thought the Blackberries belonged to his delegation, but I doubt it.

It took me a while to figure out they were the electronic variety. Boy am I behind the times, when I think BlackBerries I think of pie or jam!

I see we’ve made spying on us as easy as crossing our border.

Not exactly. We can reject his diplomatic credentials, and declare him persona non grata. That means he goes home and isn't allowed back. It works the same way for our overseas diplomats. Not all foreign "officials" have DI, though. Those who don't, and are caught spying, can be arrested and prosecuted.

Sure, they probably accidentally fell into his socks and underwear. Happens all the time! Just ask the Dems.

“I didn’t even know they were in season.”

Dewberries are ripening now...blackberries have at least a month to ripening.

Why would a table of these devices even be left unattended by Secret Service?

I remember growing up going to my father’s stepfather’s house and picking and eating wild figs. I was reward about 30 minutes later with a trip to my father’s stepfather’s bathroom.

Good question. Would been nice if they had planted listening devices in them...but they retrieved them so that wouldn’t be the case.

“Sources said the man claimed to have taken the devices accidentally.”

How can anyone take “six or seven” Blackberry devices accidentally? He must think we are as dumb as he appears to be.

So I guess he just didn’t see the asset ID tags that are affixed to government issues devices. I have never seen government Blackberry without one.

I've never seen a government Blackberry, ever.

As an aside, they shouldn't be left lying around anyway (not justifying the Mexican official's actions).

I think they were attended, that’s how the guy got caught.

Why a tableful? When you enter a classified conference or briefing, you leave your cell phone, Blackberry, iPod, and so forth outside.

Classy joints have little mini-lockers with keys, some places have a table, and sometimes you put your name on it with a stickynote, or sometimes in a Ziplock with your business card.

If unattended, these tables are a gold mine of contact lists, call logs, passwords, and data.

I hope the Secret Service remembered to check the hubcaps on their cars.
