SAN ANGELO, Texas – The first of more than 400 children taken from a polygamist compound boarded buses Tuesday bound for 16 emergency shelters, children's homes and foster care agencies throughout the state, including two in North Texas.

As the buses rolled out, the children eagerly waved and smiled at television cameras. Lawyers inside the San Angelo Coliseum who were meeting with their adult or child clients said authorities allowed no one in or out while the children, 114 of them by day's end, were loaded onto the buses.

Excellent point and a fantastic solution for the care of the children!

The LDS Church is in full denial and damage control regarding the FLDS church. If anyone would step up to help these children, you would expect it would be LDS. Are they doing that? No. No, and No. In fact, the LDS has issued statements that they disavow the FLDS in every possible term. Way to go!

Nice.

I am sure Saundra won't step up to help these hundreds of kids.

Her church has already said they won't - but maybe she will make a liar out of me.

I think Jeffs ripped some kids from their fathers. However, they have legal recourse for those actions, no?

I certainly don’t find any thing at all to support regarding Warren Jeffs. I hope he gets all he has coming to him in the big house.

I am not coming from the same place as the poster you addressing, but I would like to point out that it is possible to have reservations about state care without despising foster parents. My parents were foster parents when I was a child, and in my own current family we have taken an emergency placement as well. Foster parents mostly want what is best for the children placed with them.

I also want to preface my further comments by acknowledging that CPS is not the same in every state. Some states have a lot more corruption than others. At first I thought that state custody would be a certain disaster for many of these children, but I now realize that I don't know much about Texas.

However, the system that oversees foster care can be prone to corruption because of lack of accountability, with respect to both the decision to remove a child from a home and the oversight of the foster home. If you are in an awful cult, the state can rescue you. If a lazy or corrupt social worker puts you in a bad foster home, there may be no one to rescue you. There is also the muddying effect of federal money serving as incentives to states to maintain children in foster care.

I have read that in at least one state, a child removed from his home on the presumption of abuse is statistically more likely to *die* while in foster care than if he had stayed in the presumably abusive family. In most states, you may have a great chance of getting a good placement, but if you happen not to, you may really be hosed with no way out. I hope that in most states the children are well cared for in foster homes. We loved our foster children and cried when they eventually were moved.

“Polygamist Ranch”. Heh. I have this mental image of the wives grazing and mooing gently.

When the story first broke, we were lied to and continue to be lied to.

This is so disgusting! And the “abused girl” who started it all is a 33 year old nut job who is known for filing false reports.

So then, why do you believe the media report that the call was a hoax? It's the same media making the report, is it not?

So did I, but so far I’ve tried to avoid being lynched by the radical violent monogamists here!

TIME: You were 18 when you were told you were going to be the fourth wife of Merril Jessop, a 50-year-old leader of the FLDS. How did you feel?

Carolyn Jessop: I was shocked. I was devastated. I really wasn’t expecting that I’d be getting married. I didn’t want to get married. I really had my heart set on going to college. The biggest concern I had with it was that once you’re married, your husband really does own you.

He took children from their mothers. Some of these children don’t have biological mothers at the Texas compound.

What a sad picture...a seventeen y/o with three children. *sigh*. One of those little girls look like she might have that disease I was reading about earlier (I've forgotten the name of it)

Seems to me that if the LDS wants to disavow the FLDS, they would step in and help these children, letting everyone see that they don't condone the actions of the FLDS

I know that he took children and mothers from other husbands, but is there any source for your idea that he removed children from both parents?

“creepy foster homes”

Sorry, they are not going to creepy foster homes.( The kind that make money by taking in kids.) These children are going to Children's Homes that have folks that are trained to handle extreme situations. Saundra, why don't you join me and others praying for the children and those who are appointed the job to care for them?

It was in one of the articles I read that was linked to on one of the many threads on FR. I'm sorry that I don't know which thread or which article.

It was an accounting of a couple of people that had left the group in Hilldale, I believe.

Some of these folks seem to put their understanding of a parent as the parents they know of or what they are supposed to be.

These parents are beyond dysfunctional, the women are like children themselves with no sense of a “self” and subservent to men.
They are in no way capable of parenting a child to adulthood, only to become another subservent non human to have more kids as a string of so called non legal wives.

This is not a family, this is not normal, this is not human

Seems to me that if the LDS wants to disavow the FLDS, they would step in and help these children

Ah. Here's the new anti-Mormon meme, I see. The LDS Church is now mean and bad and rotten because they haven't swooped in and scooped up these children and put them in Mormon foster homes in pristene, leafy Salt Lake suburbs.

And that would somehow show the world that we "disavow" the FLDS sect?

Right.

Think about that for a moment.

As this story has unfolded, there have been news agencies broadcasting pictures of the Salt Lake LDS temple as they're describing what's going on in the YFZ Ranch in Eldorado. There are idiots on every one of these Flds threads saying that the LDS Church is no different than the FLDS Cult; we're exactly the same; we're morally (or immorally) equivalent.

If our Church--or even our Church members--went in en masse and took those kids under a protective wing, it would only provide fodder for all the rabid Mormonhaters to say that we (the LDS) really are the same as the FLDS, and here's proof: we're taking the sect's kids and raising them as our own. You're not LDS and you have no way of knowing; but any Mormon can tell you this is exactly what would happen. With the Mormonhaters, we're damned if we do and we;re damned if we don't. Basically, we're just "those damned Mormons."

It would be just as simple to say, if the evangelicals are so sure that all Mormons are going to hell and that we're not Christians, why doesn't one of these big mega-churches swoop in and show some Christian kindness by taking all these cult kids in. What is your church doing?

None of this is to say our Church is doing nothing. When we provide help, it is low-key and mostly behind the scenes. Individual members have already reached out. My wife would love to take in some of these kids; our heart aches for how they've been treated--both by the state, and more so by their cult. We have our own problems we are dealing with, though, and that is not an option.

Oh, since you asked how it was known that the girl in the photo was 17 (with 3 children) and in your next post you quoted Carolyn Jessop, I thought you meant that Carolyn Jessop was the girl in the photo (whose name is Carolyn Young)
