NEW YORK (AP) — A former U.S. Army mechanical engineer used his job at a military research center to fetch dozens of classified defense documents for an Israeli agent, prosecutors say.
The agent — who was at the center of another, infamous 1980s espionage scandal — provided Ben-ami Kadish with wish lists of secret records, according to prosecutors. Over six years, Kadish took home information about nuclear weapons, a modified version of an F-15 fighter jet and the U.S. Patriot missile air defense system, and he let the unidentified Israeli consulate worker photograph the documents in his basement, prosecutors say.
More than two decades later, the 84-year-old Kadish was charged Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan with four counts of conspiracy, including allegations that he disclosed U.S. national defense documents to Israel and acted as an agent of the Israeli government.

Of course Kadish and Pollard are Americans, not Israelis, so our attitude toward Israel is irrelevant as to their fates. Why this came up now, and how long Kadish has been known about is an interesting question. Some reports 2004, others much longer. On the one hand Israel should have disclosed his name earlier, on the other if we knew in 2004, why wasn’t he investigated and charged then. If the intent was to pressure Israel into concessions to the palestinians, I suspect that tactic will backfire.

I would presume: (1) there is some sort of trade going on or (2) it is a reminder to the arabs that Israel has the bomb.
More likely a ham handed attempt to pressure Israel on the palestinian issue. Ham handed because it seems to have generated some anger over the relative pass given most other spies, as well as Israel's usual domestic coverup of American agents. Unlike the suggestions upthread, there have been numerous incidents with friendly nations, multiple incidents from South Africa and the Phillipines, Saudi Arabia, South Korea in the last couple years a top Colin Powell aid spying for Taiwan, a top Cheney aid for Pakistan, ironically a Brit arrested the same year Pollard was caught. They simply get no attention. We're pulling out all the stops for a palestinian state.
As to Kadish, I don't much care about his fate.
Perhaps the US needs to think about that?
