My theory is that like her father, Julie thinks of herself as a practitioner of "Realpolitik," which is defined by thefreedictionary.com as
politics based on practical rather than moral or ideological considerations
Adopting "Realpolitik" enabled Richard Nixon to turn from being the fierce anti-communist of the '50s, to becoming a promoter of "detente" with the Soviet Union and a friend to communist China in the '70s.
