Clinton in the Wilderness
Real Clear Politics ^ | April 22nd, 2008 | Richard Cohen

Posted on 04/22/2008 9:41:59 AM PDT by The_Republican

But she has gone too far -- too much disturbing stuff, some of it shocking in its coarseness. For instance, she added the coy "As far as I know" to her "60 Minutes" statement that Obama is not a Muslim.

More important, she offered a weak and disingenuous defense of her Senate vote in support of going to war in Iraq.

But more recently came her stunning Moses Moment, that polygraph buster about being under sniper fire in Bosnia. It was a defining time in her campaign, not because she exaggerated or lied -- call it what you want -- but because the statement was hurled into a gale of contrary evidence, including eyewitnesses and video: a serene welcoming ceremony, complete with the requisite young girl bestowing the requisite gift. No snipers. No avoiding the obvious, either: Sometimes Hillary Clinton just can't help herself.

The story was just plain nuts -- and Clinton herself has been at a loss to explain it. But for many voters, it encapsulated their suspicion, their anxiety, their hesitation about Clinton: She lies.

The consequences for her were ruinous. In a Washington Post-ABC News poll, only 39 percent of voters said they consider Clinton honest and trustworthy. This is a damning indictment.

The Financial Times billboarded an opinion column last week "Bush's worst legacy" and wondered if it was Iraq or fiscal policy. The menu of choices in this case is so vast as to induce vertigo, but let me suggest Bush's "worst legacy" is what he has done to whatever trust Americans still had in government.

This administration's incessant lying, its secrecy -- its creepy Cheneyism with its petty justifications for torture and violation of privacy -- is its worst legacy, one that will endure long after Wal-Mart opens a branch in Sadr City.

What’s wrong with BO being a Mohammedan? Doesn’t it mean that he is a man of peace?

Hi, Real Clear Politics, if you're reading this ( I doubt it, we're that icky conservative cabal).

I don't want the citizens of this country to trust government. In any capacity. Government, in and of itself, is an evil in my opinion. So, if Bush & Co. really have decreased te national trust of government, so much the better.

Honestly, nothing’s “wrong” with it per se, but Clintoncorp is convinced it will resonate with all of us in the great unwashed mass of conservatism, since we’re obviously afraid of Muslims and Xenophobic, on top of being greedy bigots. They still haven’t caught on that we disagree with socialism in all its forms, no matter how it’s disguised.

Clinton In The Wilderness

Doesn't that put the author, Richard Cohen, squarely in the wilderness, as well?

It was not that many months ago that little Richie was singing paeans of praise for Hillary the Inevitable.

An honest scrutiny of Bill’s campaign and he would still be feeding at the public trough in Arkansas. Obama’s candidacy has split the loyalty of the otherwise subservient press, and one thing that Hillary cannot survive is a critical examination in the light of day.

Not only did she lie, she then lied about telling the lie, and then she lied about that too!

She's a pathological liar.

Back in the late 90's, an Arkansas State Senator and State Supreme Court Judge famously said ..

"The clintons would sooner climb a tree to tell a lie than stay on the ground to tell the truth."

LOL! Yeah, some edits. Not a lot of us would have gotten beyond this profoundly silly lead paragraph:

It was nice of Hillary Clinton to issue, as all the candidates did, a statement about Passover, the Jewish holiday of the season. Clinton said she was "deeply moved" by its message of freedom and human dignity, but she should have plowed on past Exodus and into Numbers and Deuteronomy. It is there she can find a lesson for herself -- how Moses, after all he had done, was not allowed to step foot in "the good land that is beyond the Jordan." For Moses, that was Israel. For Clinton, it's the White House.

That's what Cohen meant by "Moses moment." I think it's technically illegal to torture a metaphor by stretching it enough to identify Hillary Clinton with Moses, or if it isn't, at least the animal cruelty people ought to be notified. Cohen's point, I think, was that in the seeking of her Promised Land Beyond The Potomac (that identification makes me a little queasy as well) she has committed the political sins of - well, what precisely? Being caught out in a lie? Blowing the cover story that the MSM, including Cohen himself for years now, carefully crafted for her?

One enters these biblical waters at one's own peril. Whether Cohen himself wishes to take on the narrative of Judas if Hill doesn't get the nomination or the Prodigal Son if she does, the metaphor can hardly scream any louder than it is presently doing.

Cohen makes the risible claim that Bush's "legacy" consists of a diminishment of trust in government. What, one wonders, accounts for the widespread public mistrust of the mainstream media? I'm thinking of motes and beams here...

When he talks about “This administration’s incessant lying,” does he have ONE example to back it up? Me thinks his covering for the Clinton’s lies for so long has made him become one of them. Cohen is part of the lie, he himself lies, and he has no credibility on this one.

The fix is in. There is no way the elitists’ are going to put B.O. in the White House. They will ignore the popular primary vote, risk civil war and nominate Hillary or someone else as their candidate. Time heals all wounds and will allow McCain the Presidency because they know that this country is headed for revolt. Their chances are better 4 years down the road when everything goes to sh&t.

The good thing about being a Mohammedan is you can beat, maim or kill as many other Mohammedans as you want and no other Mohammedans offer a word of reproval, and a few would offer their approval.
