My sister visited Rome last year and the one thing she remembers most is seeing the wretched excess, glitz, and opulence of the Vatican while pathetic cripples beg just a few yards outside.
If the Vatican did not exist, these "pathetic cripples" would find another place to beg.

Actually as I understand it from several priests and others who have visited Rome, there are vast numbers of people who’s occupation is picking pockets and begging. The drugs addicts are extra.
