It was also the era of “tune-in (with drugs) and drop out”... it wasn't the beginning of the entitlement mentality, but increased its national affect exponentially. It was a tragic experiment which gave foundation to the meaning of “liberal” and the “me” generation. Abdication of personal responsibility was also widely manifested. Kooks and intellectuals embraced the same values.

Television and communications brought it into our homes. Political corruption of both sides began to be exposed.

I lived through it, and was to a degree influenced by it. But in retrospect, when you study the real history of the era I find it to be an embarrassing, but to some degree necessary time.

When the history of the American democracy is written, I just hope this isn't the period cited as the beginning of the end.

I had begun writing a book about your statement about this period cited as the end of American dream but as I kept doing research, I realized that other ages had been similar, such as the 1920’s, the 1870’s. Both periods saw hubris increase with wealth and brought corrections to human thinking/behavior by pain. I wasn’t alive in the 1960’s so I will refrain from comment but I do see similarities in this age of hubris from living beyond our means and painful, dramatic changes stemming from far right politics of globalization and far left politics of Socialism. In the end, we will behave according to how we are created which is 2/3rd’s responsible and 1/3rd sadist. Right now it appears the opposite ratio and harsh correction in our country has just begun. Let’s hope our fixes don’t further mutate from Socialism to Fascism.
