Maher to Apologize for Calling Pope a 'Nazi' By Melanie Hunter-Omar CNSNews.com Senior Editor April 17, 2008

(CNSNews.com) - Liberal talk show host Bill Maher, whose controversial comments about the pope drew fire from the Catholic community, is planning to apologize Friday night for falsely accusing Pope Benedict XVI of being a Nazi, the Catholic League announced Thursday.

Catholic League President Bill Donohue received a phone call Thursday from an HBO executive regarding comments Maher made last Friday on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher."

As Cybercast News Service previously reported, Donohue said Maher "lied when he said the Pope 'used to be a Nazi.' Like all young men in Germany at the time, he was conscripted into a German Youth organization (from which he fled as soon as he could). Every responsible Jewish leader has acknowledged this reality and has never sought to brand the Pope a Nazi. That job falls to Maher."

Apparently HBO agreed with Donohue's assessment. "Apparently, now Maher does as well. Ergo, the apology," Donohue said.

So will the Catholic League accept Maher's apology?

"Assuming it comes across as genuine, the answer is yes. But I hasten to add that what we would really like to see is for Maher to stop with his hateful diatribes against the Catholic Church. So this is a start, but it hardly puts to rest our concerns," said Donohue.

"After all, there are plenty of factually accurate things Maher could say about other groups that would insult its members, but he chooses not to go there. Perhaps he can add Catholics and the Catholic Church to that protected list as well," he added.

sacred tradition

Nearly time Christ spoke of "tradition," it was to denounce it.

Yup. Just as when he prayed for unity, realizing a Luther would come along to foist heresy on His Church, he also was aware that the heresy of man-made traditions such as sola scriptura would spring up and divide His flock. I would expect Him to denounce those anticipated man-made traditions at the same time he left us with his One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

You'll notice--- at least I've noticed --- on threads like these for the past 2 yeara or so, that when prominent Catholics get wrongly villified as Nazi collaborators and Jews come to their defense of (e.g Suzanne Fields and Jewish World Review defending the Ratzinger family, Rabbi David Dalin and Israeli historians Pinchas Lapide and Dan Kurzman defending Pope Pius XII, Vad Yashem director Yacov Lozowick standing up for Pope John Paul II--- dozens of other examples) the argument on the other side becomes:

"Oh, we all know how the Jews lie."

At that point, what can you say? I just shake my head.

It is an amazing contrast this week, watching the Holy Father and his message of love and light, preaching the Gospel versus the agenda of hate, disparagement and false witness by some on the religious forums here in FR. One example is that of Christian witness. It would be ludicrous to apply that label to those who’s example is hate and spite.

What a lovely Haggadah. The best are beautifully illuminated.

I have a copy of the Arthur Szyk Haggadah, and it is simply magnificent from start to finish. Quality binding, and its own slipcover, but it's the illustrations/illuminations that make it absolutely unique.

the assumption all German soldiers were nazis

I said no such thing. You inferred that I intimidated that all german soldiers were nazis.

Wasn't Ratzinger an unwilling Hitler Youth, and a conscript into the army at age 16?

Why yes....he was an unwilling Hitler Youth (membership was required for all 14-year old German boys after December 1939) and wasn't he a conscript.

True believers don't need to be conscripted do they?

Obviously you have difficulty with reading comprehension and have not checked your facts. Before attempting to excoriate me for something I wrote, you should have your facts straight.

Maher can be a funny guy, when he's not talking politics. He's a leftist hack, who tried to make some jokes about the pope on issues that would tend to be sore spots, or embarrassing. Part of humor is based in some level of truth in the statement, and delivery of the punchline. Telling this set of jokes with those punchlines just didn't work on many levels.

So spare me your self righteous indignation.

“heresy of man-made traditions such as sola scriptura”

Nowhere in scripture does it say that tradition is inspired by God or holy men were moved by God to create a tradition or that tradition has the same or equal authority as the scriptures. In fact, it is the scriptures that are able to make one wise unto salvation. That cannot be said of tradition.

I watched too, specifically for the apology that never happened.

I’ll not care that he bashed Catholics when he has the balls to say the same thing about Muslims. Until then, I was offended.

He should have been fired. He went on and on and on about his hatred for religion. But, Larry King will give him a few hours to spread his hate a little more.

Like another poster, I get HBO for free and since the Sopranos ended, never watch it.

~~~Why doesn’t the media ever mention that Pennsylvania, full of people with no jobs and no health insurance, is headed by a Democratic governor who claims the economy of Pennsylvania is “wonderful”?
In all the world, across continents and oceans and nationalities, the RCC could find no man up to the task of being pope other than someone who had been a member of the Hitler Youth and whose father was in the S.S.
As you vent your irrational hate for all things Catholic, you're also bearing false witness.
You post no links or documentation for any of this garbage.
But you do have a history of posting false information about Catholic issues.
Your posts are dripping with hate.
Tedless Turner said the other day that the world was over populated.
Well Ted when you start eliminating people from the face of this earth I nominate, Bill Maher, Calypso Louie Farrakhan, Reverend Wright, Reverend Jackson, Al Sharpton, all Liberals and of course yourself as mandated volunteers to take advantage of your planet decreasing population policy.
I think Maher isn’t funny, just a bitter, angry, narcissitic, smug SOB.
You can add 'punk' to the list as well.
