Maher to Apologize for Calling Pope a 'Nazi' By Melanie Hunter-Omar CNSNews.com Senior Editor April 17, 2008
(CNSNews.com) - Liberal talk show host Bill Maher, whose controversial comments about the pope drew fire from the Catholic community, is planning to apologize Friday night for falsely accusing Pope Benedict XVI of being a Nazi, the Catholic League announced Thursday.
Catholic League President Bill Donohue received a phone call Thursday from an HBO executive regarding comments Maher made last Friday on HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher."
As Cybercast News Service previously reported, Donohue said Maher "lied when he said the Pope 'used to be a Nazi.' Like all young men in Germany at the time, he was conscripted into a German Youth organization (from which he fled as soon as he could). Every responsible Jewish leader has acknowledged this reality and has never sought to brand the Pope a Nazi. That job falls to Maher."
Apparently HBO agreed with Donohue's assessment. "Apparently, now Maher does as well. Ergo, the apology," Donohue said.
So will the Catholic League accept Maher's apology?
"Assuming it comes across as genuine, the answer is yes. But I hasten to add that what we would really like to see is for Maher to stop with his hateful diatribes against the Catholic Church. So this is a start, but it hardly puts to rest our concerns," said Donohue.
"After all, there are plenty of factually accurate things Maher could say about other groups that would insult its members, but he chooses not to go there. Perhaps he can add Catholics and the Catholic Church to that protected list as well," he added.
When Don Imus said something on a similar scale, Obama demanded Imus be terminated.
First let me tell you, I do not have cable tv, as a result, I wouldn't know this maher character if I met him on the street. My point was that, it would seem to me that a talk show host would understand that words have meanings, most often exact meanings. To call the Pope a nazi simply because he served in the German Army is ridiculous to say the least. It would be like calling Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe Republicans simply because they are members of the US Senate that got elected by putting the R label after their names.
I don't believe maher called the Pope a nazi to start a discussion or debate because the name he called him, nazi is totally false.
I went on to say that had he wanted to say something he could defend, or possibly defend, he could have said that the Pope, as a Roman Catholic might not be considered a Christian by many in the Born Again Christian community.
I hope I have made it a bit clearer. I was not defending maher, I don't know him and would not defend a fool who tosses the accusation of being a nazi along so freely. It is fools like that along with the slim they have that prevents me from even considering cable.
How could one ever explain having cable tv in the house if Jesus ever walked in and started playing with the remote?
Part of the joy the Left has in calling the Right “Nazis” and “Fascists” is that it makes it seem “reciprocal” to call them “Communists” and “Socialists” regardless of their ACTUAL affiliation with Socialist Worker type groups and CPUSA.
Yeah;
What a shlemeil
What a schmuck
What a putz
What a schlepper
What a schmendrick
What a marvin
Don Imus, fired for a bigoted comment, had an interesting take on people who make over-the-top bigoted comments about the Pope and Christians in general. He said that the people who make these jokes are cowards, because they know that Christians will not hunt them down and kill them.
I wonder if Maher has ever poked fun at the Muslims.
Sadly, that's true.
I am ashamed to report that I have twice been called a “Nazi” by ultra politically correct liberals when I worked in NYC. Ashamed because only twice means I wasn’t trying hard enough...
Maher makes a crack and an apology and gets the equivalent of millions in publicity buzz.
Dream on.
Write a quick letter of protest to the head honchos at HBO here:
Yup, that’s the page I wrote to HBO. And I’m sure they won’t like it as I said that my next step was to call my cable company and cancel HBO.
I wrote. I encourage other to do the same.
Similar message sent by me. I said I’d await his apology before deciding on whether to continue to purchase any Time Warner products.
I second that. The only thing these people will respond to is potential loss of viewership, which means $. That's all they know.
This guy is a “shock jock” so he makes his bread and butter by offending. Best ammo is to ignore him.
I’ll never forget what he said shortly after 9/11.
Generally I ignore this nonsense, but this was too much. I think Maher isn’t funny, just a bitter, angry, narcissitic, smug SOB. I’d like it if he had to squirm a bit for his anti Catholic diatribe.
What did he say after 9/11? I hardly ever watch the clown unless PJ ORourke is on...
“What did he say after 9/11? I hardly ever watch the clown unless PJ ORourke is on...”
He said that what atta did took “guts” not like the cowards who bomb them from afar(meaning the US military)
He got kicked off the network channel and then slimed his way onto HBO.
That’s why whatever he calls the Pope, The Pope should take it as a compliment considering the filthy source.
Ah, yes, I do recall hearing about that sick comment.
Maher deserves pity. He also deserves to be fired.
He also “apologized” for his stupid 9/11 comments.
