I thought this would be much ado about nothing until I watched the video.

The timing of the “scratch” with his remark about Clinton, followed by several smirks and a long pause while he waited for audience response makes it very clear it was on purpose.

Barry had a bad time at the debate and his best response is to act up for the ‘hood.

I watched and had initial doubts, but your comments convinced me. “Analysis” like this is why I love FR.

Ok, so you scratch with your middle finger. Lots of people do. It’s an unconscious thing.
But the point is, Obama doesn’t scratch with his middle finger. If that was his habit, we’d have seen it before. Unless you’re accustomed to it, it’s awkward and unnatural to extend that finger and keep the other ones down at the same time—coincidentally, at the same time it serves as the perfect punctuation.
Besides, he’s spent half his life being groomed for the cameras. He’s media-prepped and practiced, and is unlikely to have made such a move accidentally. IMHO, this was a scripted speech right down to the hand gestures.
