Targeting al Qaeda in Iraq’s network, March-April 2008 (53 senior leaders killed or captured )
Long War Journal ^ | April 16, 2008 8:54 PM | Bill Roggio

As Coalition and Iraqi security forces work to dismantle al Qaeda in Iraq’s network nationwide, al Qaeda is attempting to re-establish operations in its former stronghold in Baghdad as well as in the northern city of Mosul. Al Qaeda’s ability to conduct large-scale, coordinated attacks has diminished since the fall of 2007 as the security situation improved. But as yesterday’s suicide attacks in Baqubah, Mosul, Ramadi, and Baghdad show, al Qaeda still maintains some capacity to coordinate operations and target civilians.

US and Iraqi security forces have killed or captured 53 senior members of al Qaeda in Iraq’s network over the past month, Major General Kevin Bergner, the spokesman for Multinational Forces Iraq said during an operations briefing on April 15 in Baghdad. Bergner singled out the 10 senior-most al Qaeda leaders. US and Iraqi forces have killed or captured five emirs, or leaders, three cell leaders, and two facilitators – operatives in charge of moving men, weapons, explosives, and money to allow al Qaeda to continue operations. Nine of the ten senior operatives have been captured, which allows the Coalition and Iraqi forces to interrogate for information to paint a better picture of al Qaeda's network.

"kill him, kill him, kill him -and then interrogate him."

Agreed...looks like there are some still out there so we need to keep it up for many more months....and could the two clowms last night handle that?...

Dropping this link on the thread:

Democrats Demonstrate Why Neither Can Be Commander-In-Chief

**********************EXCERPT**********************

Charlie Gibson opened the topic up with a video question which included: “do the candidates have a real plan to get the troops home … considering what is happening on the ground, how is that going to happen?”

Gibson then adds “Senator Clinton … your campaign manager … was asked “is Senator Clinton going to stick to her announced plan of bringing one or two brigades out of Iraq a month, regardless of the realities on the ground” … the answer is yes. So if the military commanders in Iraq came to you on day one and said this kind of withdrawal would destabilize Iraq, it would set back all of the gains we have made, no matter what you are going to order those troops to come home?”.

Clinton doesn’t even blink and says “yes I am”.

You can watch the full answer for yourself below (and here if the link is not working below), but the basics of it are she will not listen to anyone who disagrees with her view that a hasty withdrawal will only force the Iraqis to take on their problems more seriously. There will be no problems, and if there are too bad.

The Democrats are doing their best ostrich imitation on matters of war-fighting: if we run away and bury our heads in the sand, the terrorists and their state sponsors won't harm us.

Un-frickin'-believable.

It is worth noting that most of these guys were CAPTURED. I guess martyrdom is for the Al Qaeda peons only.

It would be good to know just what defines “senior “ AQ. Presumably they were AQ before March ‘03.

Look at this comment from the Washington Post,...guess the Gibson question above fell into the Trivial category along with questions on Rev Wright and William Ayers:

In Pa. Debate, The Clear Loser Is ABC

****************************EXCERPT************************

Obama was right on the money when he complained about the campaign being bogged down in media-driven inanities and obsessiveness over any misstatement a candidate might make along the way, whether in a speech or while being eavesdropped upon by the opposition. The tactic has been to "take one statement and beat it to death," he said.

No sooner was that said than Gibson brought up, yet again, the controversial ravings of the pastor at a church attended by Obama. "Charlie, I've discussed this," he said, and indeed he has, ad infinitum. If he tried to avoid repeating himself when clarifying his position, the networks would accuse him of changing his story, or changing his tune, or some other baloney.

This is precisely what has happened with widely reported comments that Obama made about working-class people "clinging" to religion and guns during these times of cynicism about their federal government.

You kill a “senior leader” in an area...then you kill his second in command, who became senior leader when his leaderws was killed, then you kill *his* replacement as senior commander...eventually, you end up with illiterate 14 yr old boys as “Senior Leaders”.

Sadly, nearly that number of innocents were killed today in just a single suicide/homicide bomb attack. In the numbers game it remains difficult to claim victory, on a day-by-day basis.

Absolutely Ernie. One thing we can't take away from the hard core Wahabist and Salafist, they are tenacious bastards. Once they are finally ran out of the country, if it is actually possible, only the Shia hard cores attached to Sadr will probably be left to cause any trouble. I keep equating things in Iraq with the old wild west. Eventually the thugs where mostly silenced, and peace prevailed for the most part.
