I don't. But then of course, I am adept at detaching myself from ALL forms of hysteria. I feel like I became an adult the day I learned I did not HAVE to give myself up to my feelings and motions.

I I I I I . My point was that the Nazis made expert use of theater, imagery, hooplah, and that it's understandable that people could be swept up in it. I wasn't arguing whether or not you personally could have withstood it.

There are sometimes when anyone can get swept up in the emotions of a ritual. The Nazis took full advantage. Yesterday Rush Limbaugh was swept away by the US Army band playing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" for the Pope. When my father was laid to rest at Arlington, and the finely dressed soldier handed the folded American flag to my mother, I was blubbering like a baby. The Nazis tapped into the power of ritual, mysticism, theater, and swept away quite a lot of folks with them. It is understandable, even if you personally are able to remain stoic.
