Gülen will remain quiet as his supporters paint his return as evidence that the caliphate formally dissolved by Atatürk in 1924 has been restored.

The secular order and constitutionalism in Turkey have never been so shaky.

Disturbing.

Turkey is nearing the cliff. Please, Secretary Rice, do not push it over the edge.

Bears repeating.

We will be at war with Turkey within the next five years. They have already crossed the line and this article is way behind the curve. Turkey has always been THE Islamic power and we had a shot to bring them West, but their repeated denial into the EU is the cause... this other stuff, mere icing on the rotten cake.

Did it ever occur to you that the Europeans had very good reasons to find Turkey suspect? It looks like they nailed in head on!

Like France, Britain, Germany, and Belgian aren't sitting on a powder-keg having admitted too many Muslims? You have got to be kidding.

Wherever they find themselves, islamists are insidiously insistent upon taking control of things. Any nation that fails to implement firm measures to throttle them opens itself up to the return of vicious desert savagery.

Rice has fallen under the guiles of the State Department. She will usher in Fethullah Gülen faster than Carter brought in Khomeini, all for a seat at the Legacy Table—I’m sure that she and Albright will become fast friends...

Our media rarely covers the increasing islamization happening in Turkey and elsewhere.

“Wherever they find themselves, islamists are insidiously insistent upon taking control of things.”

It’s easy for them to control things because the West has voluntarily emasculated itself and ripped out its spine. I would expect this in Europe but never in America. I guess I’m wrong.

It will be a complete surprise to almost everybody if this happens. 200 years ago Moslem meant Turks. It could again.

Very disturbing. An article like this one deserves widespread debate and verification. I have seen relatively little about developments in Turkey in the MSM and what there has been has been reassuring of the democratic process. I wonder how widespread the information from the Middle East Forum is disseminated and read. Their web site names several major newspapers as publishers of their columns and they claim several publications, as well.

Yet, what we have read here should be thoroughly studied and refuted or validated because of its potential impact. If the US has a hand in harboring and helping to create another Khomeini, Bush and Rice's legacy will be dark indeed.

I don’t know if just admitting Turkey into the EU is the answer - that is for Europeans to decide. But if Turkey finds itself rejected by the West, it will easily turn back to the area in which it was always a leader - Islam.

I have seen a few articles about the current PM and his sympathy toward islamization. Also about muslims demanding to wear headscarves, prayer times...things that threaten the constitutionalism that has prevented Turkey from simply being another Pakistan.

But it’s widely unreported.

If [Gülen returns to Turkey], Istanbul 2008 may very well look like Tehran 1979 . . . Three decades ago, the same phenomenon marked [fawning press] coverage of Iran . . . millions of Iranians turned out to greet [Khomeini] at Tehran's international airport. Turks now say that similar crowds might greet Gülen when his plane touches down in Istanbul.

"I don't want to be the leader of the Islamic Republic; I don't want to have the government or power in my hands," Khomeini said.

Iranian opponents of the Shah extended well beyond the Mosques and the Khomeini faction of Shi'a Islam.

Among many complaints against the Shah Iranians opposed the Shah's "submission" to the U.S. of A. They especially hated the exemption from Iranian law which U.S. personnel received.

All of Iran had only Khomeini and the Mosques to organize and "rally" against the Shah -- the merchants, the Western-oriented ideologues, even the Communists .. everyone greeted Khomeini.

If anything, Khomeini is already there in Turkey trying to implement an Islamist "republic."

Turk opponents of the Islamists (AKP) have taken to the streets by the millions, I don't think that they will at the airport to greet Gülen.

"If [Gülen returns to Turkey], Istanbul 2008 may very well look like Tehran 1979."

I bet it don't.
