'We are being swamped with requests from employers'
The federal government has given the green light in the past year for more than 40,000 temporary foreign workers to come to Alberta -- setting the stage for a staggering 300 per cent jump from just three years ago.
The workers, being brought in to ease the massive labour shortage, would create a new city half the size of Red Deer if they all lived in one place.
The new data provided by Human Resources and Social Development Canada also indicate the number of temporary foreign workers could grow even larger in the coming months because "a significant number" of applications are still being processed over and above the 41,218 requests approved in the past 12 months.
The information from Ottawa focused on the Labour Market Opinions confirmed in Alberta -- a key step in bringing temporary foreign workers to Canada.
Calgary immigration lawyer Michael Greene notes that a different federal department, Citizenship and Immigration, still needs to issue a work permit for the labourers to enter Canada, but that will go through in the majority of cases.
"We are being swamped with requests from employers for temporary foreign workers because they simply can't find people," Greene said.
Hell, send ‘em some of OURS.
Oh, wait, these latinos like WARM weather.
Gee, do you think they'll be looking for unemployed people in the American midwest or India?
Hell, send ‘em some of OURS.
Oh, wait, these latinos like WARM weather.
Cue Gordon Lightfoot’s “Alberta Bound.”
What fields?
Oh, wait, these latinos like WARM weather.
Just as soon as they get some sort of official looking paper the US will be their next stop.
I’m sure we have several million to spare... they can have all of ours - take the non-working ones too... Have fun paying for their medical care and other social handouts that they are not actually entitled to but our own liberals like to coddle.
Everything related to construction, from unskilled laborers to skilled trades (pretty much all of them) to technicians (engineering and environmental technologists) to engineers (civil, environmental). Also geologists, geophysicists, chemical and petro engineers, metrologists, environmental scientists, and a few others. And as those folks pile into Northern Alberta, support and ancillary workers for a variety of roles (clerical, etc) will be needed.
My uncle-in-law works up in northern Alberta right now for an oil company, doing steamfitting and welding, $120k+ a year. It is expensive to live up there, and a lot of the folks in the somewhat isolated and recreation-limited (that is, unless you are into hunting and fishing...hehe) area apparently gamble and drink their earnings away.
Oh - I don’t do any of that. I write computer models. You know, the ones used to find oil and all that.
And they will freeze to death in the winter if they don’t find suitible housing. I know some folks who are happy to rent out small rooms in their basements for $5 to $10 thousand per month (depending on number in your family) ~ there about 15 miles from some of the main operations in the oil extraction area.
“because they simply can’t find people,”
Yeah, right. At what wage?
The stupid idiot Canadian Socialists!! Can’t they see what’s happened in Halifax and elsewhere when high-breeding foreign nationals are brought in as cheap labor? They go on welfare, those not working. They bring their families and friends. It’s called CHAIN MIGRATION and dropping anchor babies and the face of Canada will be gone forever, becoming a third world sewer as has Los Angeles and much of the Southwest...
Calgary has been growing like crazy over the last ten years. The population now is well over 1 million people there.
Sorry to hear that. It’s certainly not THE CANADIENS breeding like rabbits! And that’s the problem. For every day an illegal is hear, there is a chance that his woman or women will drop down the jackpot babies and you know what they say...”They’re U.S. citizens!” Presto! An anchor...
Americans are welcome too. Especially Americans.
We have a Conservative [Republican]government now and we’re becoming more selective.
