Couples could win right to select deaf baby

Deaf couples could be allowed to use embryo-screening technology and choose to have a deaf child, after a climb-down by the Government in the face of campaigning.

Under the proposed Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, using embryo-screening deliberately to create a child with a serious medical condition - which officials had said includes being deaf - would be illegal.

Now, however, the Department of Health has agreed to cut from the Bill any reference to deafness as a serious medical condition.

This is truly the gold standard of liberal ideology-everyone should suffer equally.

Very strange...it’s eugenics in reverse.

"Being deaf is not about being disabled. It's about being part of a linguistic minority. We're proud of the language we use and the community we live in."

Normally I feel bad for deaf people who accidentally get shot by police or run over by trains, but I'd be willing to make an exception for this clown.

I have a better idea.

Let’s not let the parents select, but make it OK for the child, when they reach adulthood, decide if they want to be able to hear.

I wonder how many would choose to be deaf under those circumstances.

So much for wanting your child to be all they can be.

I have an extremely low opinion of people who would purposely make their child's life less than it could be just so that child is like them. Just to satisfy THEIR self centered need to have people like them they will happily sacrifice others to fulfill it. Just plain evil.

One has to wonder what these people would say had their parents done that to them.

They deserve to be sued by their child.

Our civilization is approaching it's end.

I used to teach deaf children. Their community is very strange, indeed. One of my co-teachers, herself a deaf lady, said that she was DISAPPOINTED that her child was hearing. That really is a selfish attitude no doubt, but I think it is partly due to a fear of not being able to interact with their child, too.

The parents choose to create a physically handicapped child they should also be ineligible for any and all government assistance such as SSI.

It's also a better alternative to abortion.

When this kid comes of age, I wonder if he or she (hm, will they pick there, too?) will be happy with the parents.

I just cannot comprehend a parent not wanting more for their children than they have. I feel every parent has an obligation to give their children a better life than they have had.

They are only partaking in this dysgenic conduct because of the explicit promise of government subsidy to compensate for the “non-disability”. More fruit of socialism, and this is just the tip of the iceberg - wait until other victim-non-victim groups capitalize on the same idea.

From the evolutionary standpoint, there is only one policy that can manage to be worse then eugenics, and the modern left found it. We are currently on the threshold of the general acceptance of active dysgenic policies, to be followed by broad promotion. Opposition to the deliberate selection of genetic defects or outright (non-fatal) permanent fetal maiming will eventually be defined as a form of bigotry. By the Axiom of Equality, we should celebrate and welcome all novel defects!

It is revolting to think about, but there may be a method to this insanity. When socialist government programs become akin to a natural resource, it should not inconceivable that some parents may eventually want to maximize the potential subsidies for their offspring (i.e. maximize their access to the “resource”). It would unfold following the same dynamic as between parasite and host, except in this case, the parasitising interaction would be mediated by a social structure (the government).

Both they,. and the parents/spouse of those who recieve cochlear implants, etc. are vilified by, and ostracised from, the radical deaf community.

To them we are the impaired, and they have the "superior culture".

Think H. G. Wells, The Country of the Blind.

Anyone that would do such a thing is a worthless SOB...

There is something weirdly sick about deaf culture. While people with disabilities usually promote research into curing their conditions, the deaf are unique in that large numbers of them consider deafness an "alternative lifestyle", not a condition that should be treated.

While enjoying deafness may be weird, it's not the government's concern as promoted for the deaf themselves. What crosses the line, to me, is demanding the right to make another person deaf. What about the "choice" of that baby? This must not be allowed to happen.
