Charter school says it received threats (MN TIZA Update)

An Inver Grove Heights charter school has received harassing and threatening calls in the wake of accusations that it blurs the line between religion and state by promoting Islam, the school's director said Friday.

The city's police are investigating and will put extra patrols in the area as a precaution, said Police Chief Chuck Kleckner. He said the school's director contacted the department Friday morning.

Asad Zaman, the director and founder of Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TIZA), said that he and the school received several derogatory phone messages and e-mails. The school came under fire last month after Star Tribune columnist Katherine Kersten questioned whether TIZA, which receives public money, promotes the Muslim faith.

The K-8 school has a special emphasis on the cultures of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Zaman said that the school is nonsectarian.

Here we go.........

Playing the victim, as predicted.

Looks like the Strib is going to throw their own, Katherine Kersten, under the proverbial bus.

I have no doubt that they received some derogatory emails and phone calls; but then what is “deorgatory” and what is “accusatory” may be blured in their minds too.

I am suspicious of claims that they received “threatening” communications.

It’d be nice to know what sort of protections the police have offered the teacher who spoke out against the school. Is (s)he receiving harassment and threats?

Don’t know. She has not been heard from since telling her story to Kersten. She probably has changed her phone number and is on vacation somewhere......

I guess people offering how to raise the flag is perceived as threats...

Maybe the school itself is a threat...

Maybe there are LINKS to terrorism is one looks into the background of the people running the school -- not necessarily the people running the school but people they know may have significant ties to terrorists...

If the school is asking for help against possible threats, then HOMELAND SECURITY should make sure that none of the relatives/friends that run the school are involved in bomb making/terrorism... After all, one never knows where a terror threat might come from...

Well until this came up a couple days ago I thought that the only Muslim charter school in MN was in Rochester.

There is a good sized group of Somali’s here. A few years ago one of them decided to apply for and got an ok for a Charter school for the kids, since the young ones were uncomfortable and not learning well because of the different ‘culture’. (and the older the get the more they are corrupted by our culture) . The school is supposedly open to all but was put together so they children of somali’s would have smaller class sizes and get better education in math and science. Found this link, it’s a k-8 and was specifically founded for somalis. and follows islamic dietary guidelines. Student to staff ratio is about the same as other public schools. But this school is for somali students and if food is based on islamic guidelines why is it not a private school just like the Catholics and Lutherans have to provide?

Yeah. I’ll bet.

I wonder..... Do they do this whenever other kids are threatened or harassed, or do they just look the other way? hmmmm.

“Zaman said that the school is nonsectarian.”

Is this the director that couldn’t work the flagpole? Yeah,
I’ll believe what she says!

Kersten isn't the Red Star Tribune's own. That would be Lori Sturdevant and Prick Coleman. So it's easy.
