The slot machines are much more secure, the software has to be written to much better standards and the hardware is much more tamper resistant.

I agree they are more secure but the fundamental design flaw of both electronic slot machines and voting machines is that the electronics are accessible to the public. A probe could go in through a cooling fan exhaust, a screw hole, or a tiny drilled hole. The probe could access and set RAM contents while the machine is in operation. Learning the pseudo-random-number seed used by the software would let the player know when the machine will pay off without disturbing anything. That would be hard to defend against or detect as long as the electronics are out on the floor. It's not well protected until the computer is moved to a high security backroom with the slot machine only doing the presentation.
