Forecaster expects eight Atlantic hurricanes this year Wed Apr 9, 2008 11:32am EDT
MIAMI (Reuters) - The noted Colorado State University hurricane research team predicted on Wednesday that 15 tropical storms would form during the coming Atlantic storm season, of which eight would strengthen into hurricanes.
The team founded by forecasting pioneer Bill Gray increased its outlook by two tropical storms and one hurricane over its last outlook issued in December due to improved conditions for storm development, including warmer sea surface temperatures in the eastern Atlantic.
The Colorado State team, now led by Gray protege Phil Klotzbach, predicted in December that the six-month season beginning on June 1 would produce 13 tropical storms, of which seven would become hurricanes and three would be major hurricanes with winds of at least 111 mph (178 kph).
The average hurricane season produces about 10 tropical storms and six hurricanes, but researchers believe the Atlantic is in a period of heightened storm activity that began around 1995 and could last 25 to 40 years.
Last year, 15 tropical storms formed and six became hurricanes.

Bush’s fault - how many will hit New Orleans?
Gosh, I hope these eight hurricanes aren’t as devastating and catastrophic as all of the predicted hurricanes that ended civilization in the USA in 2006 & 2007. Man, those were some BAD storms they’d predicted.
After blowing the 2006 and 2007 forecasts, I’m going to have to say that they’re out of chances to cry wolf.
I predict that this season will produce at least six more predictions than last year’s record nine predictions.
Noted because they haven't even been close in their predictions the last two years...
We were supposed to have a "wave" of Katrina's two years ago, and several more CAT 5's last year, as I recall...
But we have no idea what the weather is going to be tomorrow morning!
Almanac prolly has a better track record - maybe I could get a grant to study that...

Yup. See we’re supposed to believe all of the hogwash junk science about climate changes, predicted to be devastating in the next 50-100 years, yet they can’t get the hurricane season right year to year.
Oh and now all of the recent cooling we’re seeing has come from La Nina which scientists still have little knowledge of why it forms.
But for sure global warming is happening!!!
It will be eight, unless in is less, in which case they will revise the number downward... Or if it is more, in which case they will revise the number upward...
The only thing that is certain is that no matter how many hurricanes there are, it is a symptom of Global Warming and All George Bush’s Fault.
I believe their first prediction last year was 14 for 2007. That means almost 1/2 the chance of last year and there were none last year. Whew.... feel better now./s

Actually it’s a lot of devastating hurricanes, it will be global warming’s fault. If it’s abnormally too few, it will be because of CLIMATE CHANGE.
Either way, you’re right...it’s Bush’s fault.

They should run an office pool, where each of the “noted scientists” picks a number out of a hat, 1-30, kind of like for the Superbowl Score. Then one of them is certain to be right. The one who is right gets first pick next year...
