Iraq's Real Gains
The Washington Post ^ | April 9, 2008 | Barham Salih

As we mark the fifth anniversary of the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime, it is important to reflect on the journey we have embarked upon.

Liberation offered us the opportunity to construct a new state, based on the rule of law and democratic principles. Unlike in the past, this Iraq would acknowledge and build upon its diverse ethnic and religious identities. That promise has not yet been fulfilled. Mistakes have been made, and few Iraqis doubt that political and economic reconstruction could have been handled better.

Yet, against all odds, Iraq has closed its fifth year of freedom with tangible improvements -- thanks to interlocking steps on security, the economy and national reconciliation.

The author reminds us that freedom carries with it a terrible price. There's no doubt that it is better than the false alternative of tyranny and terror. Iraq's democracy is going to take a long time to be successfully consolidated. The U.S has a duty to see to it its mission in Iraq succeeds so Iraqis can enjoy the fruits of freedom and stability. It will also demonstrate that we can defeat Al Qaeda in the central front in the war on terror and elsewhere in the Muslim World.

It is the plain truth and yet so sad to not see more Americans rallying to support what was a profound, just, and successful cause.

It will be seen in the future as a fundamental turning point in the centuries of war fought by radical Islam against all rivals.

Well done President Bush— even if no one else agrees with you.

Guest editorial by Iraq’s deputy prime minister. Well-written.

Accepting defeat in Iraq would encourage al Qaeda and Iran. In many ways, al Qaeda has become a covert proxy for Iran, and it's getting this support on the cheap and under the conventional wisdom that Shia and Sunni terrorists won't and don't cooperate. Why doesn't Iran have any problems with the suicidal al Qaeda? Obviously, they've formed a Hitler/Stalin type pact.

Many people forget that Pres. Bush said clearly and repeatedly that we were taking a risk in trying to liberate a country from a dictator and trying to plant democracy in its place. Many said it could not be done. And, while the fat lady hasn’t sung yet it looks like it just might work. It was a bold stroke and a courageous stand against radical Islam.

At least some people are noting the progress.

I know its no longer taught in schools but look it up and find out how long it took for the newly formed United States of America to get their act together after the Revolutionary War. Nation building is not a 30 minute soap opera with time out for commercials.

Very true and I wonder, what would be the cost to us today if we had done nothing about Saddam? What would be the cost of a nuclear arms race between Iraq and Iran? That would be happening now if Bush had not gone into Iraq. For all those naysayers out there, do you honestly believe, we’d be better off on the sidelines watching Saddam and Imanutjob race to see who got a nuke first? What would we do about it? What is that cost???

"These are important benchmarks, and they should be recognized as credible affirmation that success is possible in Iraq. "

In the WaPo no less! That has to be troubling for the Dems.
