As we mark the fifth anniversary of the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime, it is important to reflect on the journey we have embarked upon.
Liberation offered us the opportunity to construct a new state, based on the rule of law and democratic principles. Unlike in the past, this Iraq would acknowledge and build upon its diverse ethnic and religious identities. That promise has not yet been fulfilled. Mistakes have been made, and few Iraqis doubt that political and economic reconstruction could have been handled better.
Yet, against all odds, Iraq has closed its fifth year of freedom with tangible improvements -- thanks to interlocking steps on security, the economy and national reconciliation.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
It is the plain truth and yet so sad to not see more Americans rallying to support what was a profound, just, and successful cause.
It will be seen in the future as a fundamental turning point in the centuries of war fought by radical Islam against all rivals.
Well done President Bush— even if no one else agrees with you.
Guest editorial by Iraq’s deputy prime minister. Well-written.
Many people forget that Pres. Bush said clearly and repeatedly that we were taking a risk in trying to liberate a country from a dictator and trying to plant democracy in its place. Many said it could not be done. And, while the fat lady hasn’t sung yet it looks like it just might work. It was a bold stroke and a courageous stand against radical Islam.
I WONDER WHO CAN TELL US OF THE PHYSICAL GAINS IN RECONSTRUCTION? SCHOOLS INFRASTRUCTURE,FRESH WATER,ELECTRICAL POWER, ETC?
I know its no longer taught in schools but look it up and find out how long it took for the newly formed United States of America to get their act together after the Revolutionary War. Nation building is not a 30 minute soap opera with time out for commercials.
Very true and I wonder, what would be the cost to us today if we had done nothing about Saddam? What would be the cost of a nuclear arms race between Iraq and Iran? That would be happening now if Bush had not gone into Iraq. For all those naysayers out there, do you honestly believe, we’d be better off on the sidelines watching Saddam and Imanutjob race to see who got a nuke first? What would we do about it? What is that cost???
In the WaPo no less! That has to be troubling for the Dems.
“Well done President Bush.”
Amen.
Happy V-I Day!
