Many years ago I drove into California, then during the "Meditteranian Fruit Fly" terror. At the border we were stopped for vehicle inspections for said fly. To pass the time, we were given - complements of the State of California - a copy of "California Magazine"; opening editorial started with the line "if you picked up the US by the East coast and shook it, all the loose nuts and screws would end up in California." ...and that was provided and commissioned by the State of California.
