I’m far from a follower of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (to me, a cult), however, I refuse to condemn an entire church over the vagaries of and offshoot sect (Westboro Baptist Church come to mind).

This is not, historically, an LDS "offshoot". Too many reporters have failed to dig into its history very far and just blindly accept the idea that these guys have something to do with Mormonism.

They don't.

There are, on the other hand, Mormon offshoots.

Westboro belongs to no larger movement, it is a guy with 70 or a 100 family members in a little family weirdness, that is not a part of anything, and will die out on it’s own.

The fLDS is a sect of the LDS movement, and it already consists of many thousands of members scattered over several states. Their operations have a long and troubling history.

Our Cult experts here at FR point out that they are a group that more closely represents the larger Mormon group of as recent as 1890, and judging by the posts of other Mormons on this thread http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1997522/posts?q=1&;page=1583#1583

they will be heavily defended.
