A Republican lawmaker said Monday that Democrats in the state Legislature are blocking his resolution seeking to condemn China for the recent violence in Tibet.
State Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee introduced the resolution last month. It calls on China to honor the spirit of the Olympics by promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.
He wanted the resolution passed before the Olympic torch relay comes to San Francisco on Wednesday for its only stop in North America.
"This is not a time to be silent. This is not a time to look the other way," said Blakeslee, of San Luis Obispo.
He became engaged in the plight of the Tibetan people in 1998 while he was visiting his son at a Tibetan Children's Village near Dharamsala, India. He decided to introduce a resolution after the recent violence in Tibet.
His proposed resolution would establish March 10, the anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan uprising against China, as Tibet Day. This year's violence erupted four days later.
The resolution also describes China's actions in the region as "cultural genocide" and the "the rule of terror."
With the resolution stuck in committee, Blakeslee says the Democrats who control both houses of the Legislature are ignoring his plea for a floor vote before Wednesday's torch run.
