CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico At least three people were killed and three more wounded in a highway gunbattle in northern Mexico, officials said Sunday.
The shootout took place Saturday in the southern part of the border state of Chihuahua, said Rene Medrano, a spokesman for the state attorney general's office. Authorities believe the battle was between rival drug gangs.
Mexico City newspaper El Universal reported that 14 people died in the violence.
Last month, the government sent more than 2,500 soldiers and federal police to crack down on soaring violence in Chihuahua.
About 200 people have been killed this year in Ciudad Juarez, a Chihuahua city of 1.3 million across the border from El Paso, Texas.
On Friday, U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza said the United States could issue a heightened travel alert in the coming week "to better reflect the increasing insecurity in the state of Chihuahua."
