I think you meant "median," not average.
Take five values: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 20; what's the average? 6. How many of the original values are below 6, how many above?

Actually, not really. There are slightly fewer. It’s not a normal distribution. There’s a cluster of very low-intelligence folks (mostly genetic disorders, toxin exposure, etc.) that brings the mean down disproportionately. There’s no corresponding cluster at the high end. Thus, while there are the same number of people on either side of the median, there are more above the mean than below.
