Such attractions are not normal and in this case most likely due to the absolute failure of traditional marriage norms for each of these two. Their resulting interest in each other is due to the horrible experiences the mates of their primary marriages proved to be. I'd say they both have coping issues and took refuge in each other's company. As to why there had to be a sexual component to it is not appropriate, but not entirely unexpected to those with an inability to think before they act.
Why seek from others that which you can do for yourself? Thank you Jocelyn Elders. Here's a couple who could have used your goofy wisdom.

That’s just what I was thinking, especially given this:
Mrs Deaves said the physical relationship with her father was like “a sexual relationship with any other man”.
For Mr Deaves the sexual relationship was “absolutely fantastic”.
