In an ABSOLUT World according to Mexico (Absolut responds to ad outrage)
Absolut Company Blog ^

Posted on 04/04/2008 1:51:32 PM PDT by mnehring

We have received many comments on an ad showing what an ABSOLUT world would look like from a Mexican point of view. We are sorry if we offended anyone. This was not our intention. We will try to explain. Though you may not agree, I hope you understand......

.....The In An Absolut World advertising campaign invites consumers to visualize a world that appeals to them -- one they feel may be more idealized or one that may be a bit "fantastic." As such, the campaign will elicit varying opinions and points of view. We have a variety of executions running in countries worldwide, and each is germane to that country and that population.

This particular ad, which ran in Mexico, was based upon historical perspectives and was created with a Mexican sensibility. In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues. Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.

As a global company, we recognize that people in different parts of the world may lend different perspectives or interpret our ads in a different way than was intended in that market. Obviously, this ad was run in Mexico, and not the US -- that ad might have been very different.

I find the explanation unsatisfactory.

Absolut--and all other V&S products--will remain on my NO BUY list until such time as a new ad apologizing to the United States is placed in the same locations.

“What a bunch of crappola. “more ideal”....the freakin’ “Mexicans” never lived there!”

That looked like the US-Mexican border around 1830. California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Kansas were Mexican territory. Texas was part of the state of Tejas and Coahuila... and was the least important part.

However, the territory was ceded to the U.S. in 1848 and 1849.

REMEMBER THE ALAMO!! is a punch line to a hilarious joke about throwing mexicans from an overloaded airplane.
I just went to the absolutely hard to read white on black “blog” and saw that absolut does makes products that I used to use.
No doubt Absolut’s strategy is to ride this storm out thinking an apology would draw more attention. But, if it had any sense at all, it would admit the ad is offensive and apologize to me personally. I am offended. How much vodka will soothe the pain?

I think a variety of executions would be a good idea.

Any Mexican worth his salt drinks Tequilla.....Not a stereotype just a fact. Most Mexicans would scoff at the idea of drinking Vodka.I really can’t blame them. When you get to the top shelf Tequillas vodka can’t cut it.

It’s a tremendous pity that all the energy that was spent on a vodka ad could have been directed at something that would actually have an impact on the wider issue.

Namely, asking politicians the questions about this issue that the MSM is afraid to ask, and then uploading the answers to Youtube. If people start holding politicians accountable, things will change in a hurry.

Some questions here:

One thing is certain. Some of the Absolut marketing executives are having some sleepless nights. Deserved

I haven't posted in a long time--too busy working to pay my taxes. Perhaps V&S (the swedish corp. that produces Absolut) could appreciate my take on it:

Never cared much for Absolut.

Dane can be caustic and abusive. I’ve seen Dane push the limit a few times and even get banned once.
