Some analysts of Ted Turner's spending conclude that his famous decades-long spending spree on ranchland is part of a deliberate strategy to control much of the Ogallala Aquifer that supplies water to a large portion of the Midwest and West.

They surmise that ultimately he would put this land in conservancy as some kind of trust, and that after his death it would essentially be a very large bargaining chip in the hands of a radical environmentalist foundation.
