“Muslim preacher Abu Izzadeen jailed for four and a half years”
By Duncan Gardham, Security Correspondent, and agencies
Last Updated: 3:02am BST 21/04/2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The court heard that in another speech, recorded two years later in Birmingham, Brooks asked his audience; “Are you ready for another 7/7?”.

He was yesterday found guilty of incitement to terrorism abroad along with Simon Keeler and two associates - Abdul Rehman Saleem, also known as Abu Yahya, 31, and Ibrahim Abdullah Hassan, 21. Keeler was handed the same sentence.

It followed a 10-week trial at Kingston Crown Court in London .

Brooks, Keeler and two other men, Shah Jalal Hussain, 24, and Abdul Muhid, 24, were found guilty of collecting money for terrorists in Iraq which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

All the speakers at the mosque were members of, or associated with the now outlawed Al-Muhajiroun group led by radical cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed, who left for Lebanon in the wake of the July 2005 bombings.”

“Abu Izzadeen’s speeches”
By Duncan Gardham, Security Correspondent
Last Updated: 3:01am BST 21/04/2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In the Regent’s Park speech, Abu Izzadeen, formerly known as Trevor Brooks, said jihad was the “responsibility on every single Muslim” and talking of the US attacks on the Iraqi city of Fallujah, launched the day before the speech, he added: “You should be like those who wish to go and join them, who wish Allah give them the opportunity to take some blood of those kuffar [non-believers].

Abu Izzadeen found guilty of inciting terrorism
“He [the Prophet Mohammed] said Allah will never put together the kuffar and the one who kill him inside the jahannam [hell]. So my dear Muslim brothers to kill a kaffar for the sake of Allah in jihad, be a way to the jannah [heaven] inshallah [god willing].””

Iraqi Army soldiers discover large cache with Iranian-marked weapons during Operation Charge of the Knights

Multi-National Division - Southeast PAO

BASRAH – The Iraqi Army discovered a large weapons and munitions cache in a house located in the Al Hyyaniyah area of Basrah April 19.

Soldiers from the 1st Iraqi Army discovered the cache during the search phase of Operation Charge of the Knights. The cache consisted of a large number of weaponry with Iranian markings.

The cache included a 240 mm high-explosive war-head and approximately 160 mortars. Some of which were less than 12 months old.

The cache also contained approximately 25 artillery shells, more than 20 complete improvised explosive devices, large quantities of IED components, several explosively formed projectiles and dozens of grenades and fuses. Also included was more than 20 blocks of plastic explosives, homemade anti-personnel mines packed with ball bearings, hundreds of meters of detonation cord, improvised rocket launching rails, and thousands of rounds of small-arms ammunition.

Operation Charge of the Knights is ongoing with the Iraqi Army working in conjunction with the Iraqi Police to maintain pressure on Special Groups and criminal elements by denying them sanctuaries and safe havens through Basrah and Iraq.

“Operation Charge of the Knights has been an Iraqi planned and executed operation from the very start,” said Lt. Col. Neil Harper, deputy public affairs officer for Multi-National Corps - Iraq. “The Iraqi Army demonstrated their capability to protect the people of Basrah against Special Groups and criminal elements that are ignoring the rule of law.

“The success in finding these large caches was also due in part by numerous tips from concerned local Iraqis. This is another great example of Iraqis dealing with their own issues, and they should be admired for their bravery,” Harper said.

Special Group criminals continue attacks against Iraqi people and U.S. Soldiers

Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division-Baghdad Soldiers remain committed to supporting the people of Baghdad and the Iraqi Security Forces until a time when they can take over security operations throughout Baghdad against al-Qaeda in Iraq and Special Group Criminals.

At 3:30 p.m. on April 20, a Coalition Force observation post in Sadr City was fired upon by three SG criminals and U.S. Soldiers returned fire killing one and wounding the other two.

At 4: 45 p.m., following a rocket attack, a UAV positively identified five SG criminals with rocket rails in Sadr City. Two criminals proceeded into a vehicle after loading it with the rocket rails. The other three individuals separated and went in other directions. The UAV followed the vehicle with the two criminals and rocket rails to a house. As the criminals were unloading the rails into the building, they were engaged by the UAV with one Hellfire missile, destroying the vehicle, rockets rails, and killing the two criminals.

Later, at approximately 4:50 p.m., an unmanned aerial vehicle positively identified two SG criminals loading a car with rockets and rocket rails in Sadr City. After following the vehicle in order to obtain a clear shot, the UAV fired one Hellfire missile, destroying the sedan, six rockets and rails, and killing the two criminals.

“Iraqi Security and Coalition force Soldiers are targeting criminals who violate the Iraqi Rule of Law,” said Col. Allen Batschelet, chief of staff, MND-B. “Coalition Soldiers are not targeting any political group or organization, but rather working with the ISF targeting criminals who are engaged in violent acts or about to commit a violent act.”

At 5 p.m. there was a 107 mm rocket attack conducted by Iranian-supported SG criminals that landed in the Kadhamiyah district of Baghdad, killing one Iraqi civilian and wounding eight.

Also in Kadhamiyah, an improvised-explosive device detonated in front of a U.S. patrol, killing one Iraqi civilian and wounding three others at 11 a.m.
“It is the Iranian-supported Special Group criminals who are the primary reason the people of Baghdad are suffering,” said Batschelet. “They are responsible for the rocket and mortar attacks that led to Iraqi Security and Coalition force Soldiers going into the southern neighborhoods of Sadr City. They are responsible for continued IED attacks and firefights that are causing innocent civilian deaths.”

Coalition captures alleged Al-Qaeda in Iraq leader, one suspected associate

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces detained an alleged al-Qaeda in Iraq leader and one of his suspected associates during two operations Sunday in Mosul.

Information gained from a mission Apr. 3 led Coalition forces to the target areas, where they captured two wanted men during precision operations. One of the men is believed to be an AQI leader in the city and allegedly oversees attack operations, while the other is an alleged associate.

“We’re keeping pressure on al-Qaeda in Iraq’s leaders,” said Cmdr. Scott Rye, MNF-I spokesman. “These terrorists seek to derail the people’s efforts toward a secure and peaceful Iraq.”

Coalition forces detain 19 in Mosul, Bayji

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces detained 19 suspected terrorists during operations targeting associates of al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders in the northern part of the country Saturday and Sunday.

Coalition forces targeted associates of AQI leaders during four operations Saturday and Sunday in Bayji. The ground force detained 12 suspected terrorists, including two individuals wanted for their association with an AQI leader who is believed to oversee terrorist attacks in the Tigris River Valley between Bayji and Tikrit.

During operations in Mosul Saturday and Sunday, Coalition forces used information from operations April 3 and 4 to target individuals believed to conspire directly with AQI senior leaders. The ground force detained three suspected terrorists. In another operation in the city, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual, who is allegedly closely tied to a senior AQI leader, and one other suspected terrorist.

Sunday, Coalition forces detained two suspects during an operation targeting an AQI terrorist who conducts bombings against Coalition and Iraqi Security forces.

“Our consistent efforts to disable the al-Qaeda in Iraq network are breaking apart their ability to conduct attacks against the Iraqi people,” said Cmdr Scott Rye, MNF-I spokesman.

CDC: More Than 180 Sickened in 10 States From ‘Toxic’ Vitamins

Monday, April 21, 2008

Health officials are investigating more than 180 reports of illness in people who took dietary supplements containing toxic levels of the mineral selenium.

Last month, federal officials warned consumers about harmful doses of selenium _ a mineral considered healthful in small amounts — in plastic bottles of liquid Total Body Formula and Total Body Mega Formula.

The manufacturer recalled the product March 27, but reports of 184 illnesses indicate many people are still taking it, health officials said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration found up to 200 times the label level of selenium in the products. The agency also found 17 times the label level of chromium but has not yet concluded if those levels are toxic.

Toxic levels of the minerals were in about 1,200 bottles distributed in 16 states and over the Internet, said Dr. James Lando, who is leading the team working on the investigation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health officials are looking into an escalating number of illnesses in 10 states — Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Louisiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina.

Hamas Leader Vows Not to Recognize Israel After Carter Trumpets Terror Group’s Willingness to Be Good ‘Neighbor’

Monday, April 21, 2008

JERUSALEM — Just hours after former President Jimmy Carter trumpeted Hamas’ agreement to let Israel “live as a neighbor,” the same terrorist leader he met with face-to-face vowed not to recognize the Jewish state.

But Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal did offer Israel a 10-year truce if it withdraws from all lands it seized in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Carter met twice with Mashaal over the weekend.

The former president also said Monday that he would never sit down with Al Qaeda because the terror network has no “redeeming features.”

“[Al Qaeda] are not involved in any sort of a fruitful process. They are not recognized by their own people,” Carter told FOX News in an interview Monday. “On the other hand, you have to remember Hamas in an honest and open and fair and transparent election were elected the leaders of the Palestinian government.”

Defense Secretary Gates Says Air Force Must Step Up Efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan

Monday, April 21, 2008

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday the Air Force is not doing enough to help in the Iraq and Afghanistan war effort, complaining that some military leaders are “stuck in old ways of doing business.”

Gates said in a speech at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., that getting the military services, largely the Air Force, to send more unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft to Iraq and Afghanistan has been “like pulling teeth.”

Addressing officer students at the Air Force’s Air University, the Pentagon chief praised the Air Force for its overall contributions but made a point of urging it to do more and to undertake new and creative ways of thinking about helping the war effort instead of focusing mainly on future threats.

While Gates’ comments were directed mainly at the Air Force, his concern about faster fielding of unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft included a broader appeal to the entire military. The Army, Navy and Marine Corps have been expanding their fleets of drone aircraft.

“In my view we can do and we should do more to meet the needs of men and women fighting in the current conflicts while their outcome may still be in doubt,” he said. “My concern is that our services are still not moving aggressively in wartime to provide resources needed now on the battlefield.”

Report: Muslim Leaders Want Mecca to Be Center of World Time Zones

Monday, April 21, 2008

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) could be replaced by “Mecca Time,” if a group of Muslim leaders get their way.

At the conference, “Mecca, the Center of the Earth, Theory and Practice,” Muslim scientists and clerics called for the change, arguing that the holy city in Saudi Arabia is the center of the Earth and should be the reference point for world time, not Greenwich, England, the British Broadcasting Corp. reports.

One geologist at the Qatar conference said Mecca’s longitude is perfectly aligned with magnetic north and should therefore replace the English city, which has been measuring time zones since 1884, the BBC reports.

Attendees of the conference also reviewed the “Mecca Watch,” an invention by a French Muslim which reportedly rotates counter-clockwise and displays Mecca’s direction from any point in the world, the BBC said.

The conference is part of a trend called “Ijaz al-Koran” or “miraculous nature of the holy text,” which tries to find precedents for modern science from passages in the Koran, the BBC reports.

But its critics say Ijaz al-Koran confuses spiritual truth — which depends on constant faith — with empirical truth, which depends on ever-changing science, the BBC said.

“Palestinians’ backing for terror rises”
By KHALED ABU TOAMEH

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The number of Palestinians who support attacks against Israelis continues to rise and more than half of them favor suicide bombings, according to a poll published this weekend.

The survey also showed that Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh is still more popular than Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The percentage of Palestinians who support “resistance operations” against Israeli targets rose from 43.1 percent in September 2006 to 49.5% at present. Support for this option was highest in the Gaza Strip, at 58.1%, with 24.5% in the West Bank agreeing.

Palestinians who support bombing attacks against Israeli civilians rose from 44.8% in June 2006 to 48% in September 2006 and to 50.7% now.

Again, more Gazans support these operations (65.1%), compared with 42.3% of Palestinians in the West Bank.

The Palestinian public is divided on the rocket attacks on Israel: 39.3% said the firing of these rockets was “useful” to Palestinian national interests, while 35.7% said they were harmful.”

“Saudi Arabia: Turk Sentenced To Die For Islamic Blasphemy”

SNIPPET: “News from Arab News (1), Arab News (2), Turkish Press, Los Angeles Times, Hurriyet, Zaman and blog Impudent Observer:”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Sabri Bogday is a Turkish barber, who has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for blasphemy against Islam. He had gone from Hatay province in southeast Turkey to the Saudi kingdom in 1997 and opened a barbershop. Officials at Jeddah General Court confirmed on April 16 this year that they were supervizing a trial of Mr Bogday for “swearing at Allah”.

The president of the court, Sheikh Rashid Al-Hazza’a, was on leave. 13 months months back, Mr Bogday had an argument with an Egyptian neighbor, who ran a tailor’s shop. Following this row, Mr Bogday was accused by the Egyptian of blaspheming, and was placed in jail, where he has remained since. The Egyptian tailor, meanwhile, has disappeared and did not enter any testimony at the trial. However, his original desposition stands and was the basis of the court case.

A lawyer from Riyadh said that in cases of this nature, interpretation of what is Sharia rested upon a personal interpretation by the judge. Abdul Rahman Al-Lahem said: “Some judges consider it heresy and infidelity, and say that the accused cannot repent and so faces death penalty. Others consider the statement to be disbelief, thus allow the accused to retract what he has said and repent and then set him free.”

As noted in February in the case of the Jordanian woman Fawza Falih who is facing the death penalty in Saudi Arabia for “witchcraft” - there is no crime of “witchcraft” under Saudi law. Mustapha Ibrahim, an Egyptian pharmacist, was beheaded for “sorcery” on November 2, 2007.”
