People need to stop thinking that a piece of drama is supposed to be historically accurate even it deals with historical figures. It’s not a criteria for good drama and has never at any time in the history of Western Civilization. Shakespeare’s History plays were great plays but terrible history. The list goes on...War and Peace, Amadeus. Even Stone’s Nixon was a good film if you realize it’s not a history lesson.
The standards of Hollywood are driven by two imperatives, making a buck and promoting the leftist agenda. Historical accuracy carries no weight because almost no one in Hollywood has any understanding of or appreciation for history. There are individual exceptions - John Milius (Rome) comes to mind - but for the most part, forget it.
People must be quite wary when approaching a film “based on a true story.”
I have made several, with varying degrees of historical fidelity. The primary objective is to make the film work dramatically. Then I try not to make an absolute mockery of the facts - always mindful that what has been written down, and even sometimes what has been photographed - is not necessarily the whole story...
LOL, Stone’s a commie, and has admitted his love for Castro, he can go to hell.
He is not fit to shine the President’s shoes.
“I still maintain that the historian and the dramatist work with different tools and should not be held to the same standard.”
I agree. Also, your statement about ludicrous stuff being included in “true stories” under the armor of “it really happened” is quite accurate.
“You can’t make this stuff up!” is a justifying cry I have heard many times...
I wouldn’t worry about this movie too much. As with most of the recent ‘bash Bush’ movies, not many people will see it, either in first run, or on DVD. Most folks won’t want to waste the time.
He was in the National Guard, and could have been sent over at any time, as were thousands of other young men at the time.
“I wonder what the chances are this will be magically released just before election 08.”
And imagine the embarassment on Stoned’s part when he realizes President Bush is not running in the next election.
