Yes, it’s the kids too. Don’t let them off the hook. You don’t get to be 16 and not have some input into your own actions.

I did not graduate from high school (would have been class of 1978). I dropped out of high school three months into my junior year for reasons not related to my ability to learn. Now I have a MA degree and a professional career (completing my 11th year in this profession). There are a myriad of reasons why our countries youth do not complete their high school education, some of which have nothing to do with their ability to learn or how good the school is that they attend.

Surprise, Surprise. Pour the money into the Big Cities, yet the kids don't care. And why should they? If they don't care, the government will give them goodies appropriated from those who did care.

"Our analysis finds that graduating from high school in America's largest cities amounts, essentially, to a coin toss," the study said.,
Except you don't have control over the outcome of that coin toss. It's not like schools are saying that only the upper half gets to graduate. Everyone who meets the requirements will receive a diploma. That percentage could be 100% if everyone applied themselves.

I’d love to take a survey - what % of school districts are run by Republicans ?
OTOH, if your science class consisted of watching Al Bore’s fiction “An Inconvenient Truth”, I wonder if I’d have been interested in science at all.

Seriously. First and foremost I blame the parents for not bringing the smack down and taking control in their own house and with homework and understanding it. They’re your kids. They’re your responsibility. Deal with it.

You at least had the spirit to continue your life/education.
Most of these kids will just lay back and accept what life gives them.

Thomas Sowell outlined exactly the process you describe in his landmark book "
Vision of the Anointed." I think he wrote it about the end of the Carter administration and the book has proved timeless and prophetic. You should find a copy if you haven't read it.
Public education offers all these extras in the inner cities:
- Free breakfast, as well as lunch.
- Soft studies which anyone can pass with minimal effort.
- Feel good politically correct coursework to build self-esteem.
- Free childcare in school for the girls who manage to get knocked-up and prefer drawing a welfare check to abortion or adoption.
- Sports and a plethora of other activities after school.
- Computer labs with equipment which would make a Fortune 500 company proud (well, at least for the first couple of weeks until the get vandalized).
But none of this is enough to produce a graduation rate better than 33%???? We obviously need to tax the middle class some more!

The problem with the low graduation rate of the inner cities is easily understood; however, the answer is contrary to accepted egalitarian belief in this matter.
Simply go to "The Effect of Urban Flight on IQ Distribution"; This can be found on La Griffie du Lion; that Web site is HERE
The average IQ in our big cities is now 85. This is the cutting score for graduating from the usual HS. This means that one half of inner city children cannot graduate from the usual HS without enormous desire and tutoring.
All the rest of the explanations are simply a form of denial for the real problem. President George Bush is no exception; however, I sense he realizes the problem is doing his best to come to terms with low intelligence in our educational system.
Irrational egalitarian belief that we are all equal in ability as well as in the eyes of God and the Constitution has literally destroyed the chances of many children to make some or good use of the abilities they have. No child left behind is a slogan and not a biological finding. Trying to mold children with limited academic powers into whiz kids seldom works and, then, only for a few. The rest are left discouraged and bitter.

Most of these kids will just lay back and accept what life gives them. You mean what life does to them as they blame everyone but themselves for their predicament.

They aren’t “counting” right. A lot higher percentage graduate in Texas cause we count matriculation into the Penal system as a “graduation”. We consider Pen time as Community Service!

Here in L.A. the students are too busy seeking social justice.
April 1st, 2008 -- Hundreds of high school students from across Los Angeles County gathered Monday at UCLA to hold a demonstration to promote a new civil rights movement for Latinos, chanting "aqui estamos, no nos vamos," translated from Spanish into English as, "we're here, we won't go."
(OR, it could be translated from Spanish into English as, "we're here, but we ain't goin' to school.")

Yes, it is about 24.5%! That is less than 1 in 4 in Detroit. And we wonder why a thug gets elected as Mayor?

This is why we need to have vocational programs for many of our youth so they can learn skills which can lead to gainful employment and become contributing members of society.
