I'm looking at it this way: McCain is old. It is never too early to start planning for 2012. We need to start NOW, pumping up good people to run.

Nope. We need to lift up a Conservative as a 3rd party or independent to block McCain't , and go for the win. Worst case scenario, we get the Democrat (which we'll probably get anyway), best case scenario, we get a Conservative in the White House, hopefully with Republican Conservative coattails to boot.
