The race to build the world's tallest building has reached a new level with plans for a mile-high tower to be built near the Red Sea port of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
The multi-billionaire owner of the Savoy Hotel in London has unveiled plans for the ambitious £5 billion tower, which will overtake skyscrapers planned or under construction in Kuwait and Dubai.
The new tower will surpass the
Burj Dubai (pictured), which is
under construction
The Mile High Tower will be double the height of its nearest rival, and will be almost seven times the height of the Canary Wharf tower in London.
Visitors will be able to see Africa from the top of the tower, the Sunday Times newspaper reports.
Riyadh-based Kingdom Holding, which is controlled by billionaire Prince al-Walid bin Talal, will invite bids before July for contracts to build the tower in Saudi Arabia's commercial capital.
The project will push architecture and engineering to new limits, as the tower must be robust enough to withstand the extremes of temperature and strong desert winds in the region.
Gulf Arab states, flush with funds from record high oil prices, are trying to outstrip each other to build the world's tallest building.
They have opened up a strong gap over east Asian countries in the race, with mega-skyscrapers planned or under construction in Kuwait and the booming United Arab Emirate of Dubai.
The Burj Dubai, which is due for completion in 2009, had previously been predicted to take the crown as the world's tallest man-made structure.
Prince al-Walid, a member of the Saudi royal family, bought the Savoy Hotel, in the Strand in London, for £1.25 billion in 2005.
And when the oil’s gone, it’ll sit empty...
what a treat
I seem to recall reading a story about some king in the middle east who built a tower to reach heaven, and God got angry, and then some bad stuff happened.
I believe they are aware of Oil running out as I read in Time Magazine, UAE Oil Fields are expected to dry first. Hence the effor to model themselves are Singapore or something like that......Service Based Economy.....the region needs an Economic hub.
LOL! Funniest Post of the Month!
Our dear, dear friend prince Alaweed is keeping busy.
Is there any compelling business reason for super duper skyscrapers?
Oh well, as long as they make em’ 767-resistant, I guess it’s okay.
that’s 2
I think I just shot a corn kernel out my nose.
Yeah, God doesn’t like tall buildings.
going back to their roots. The Arabs are pretty savvy traders. Always have been.
I suppose some rich American industrialist will be buying the building after the oil bubble pops.
Heck, my house is so tall I can see the moon from it.

But the Sauds don't even have the Osama types under control and no one wants to work there, visit there or even think of being there. Some people work there - and they're being paid more because the place is so unpleasant.
One wonders if there is a german engineer out there who knows a compression tower is 180 degrees wrong. One could easily get to the tropopause(10 miles up)with a tension tower : twin blimps at 1000’ intervals around a central tether line, which is also the elevator cable. Blimps are no longer 1930s Hindenbergs, much improved in the last 70 years. So, let the saudis build their mile high compression tower, it will be a pebble next to a 10 mile high tension tower...
I have a question. Where is all that money from the Saudis that was promised to their palestinian brothers when Israel pulled out of Gaza? Where are those large glittering housing projects to be built on all that prime beach front land. All I see the Saudis doing is hording their oil profits, building mega yachts, and buying Dubai condos. What gives? Where is that unshakeable arab unity?
It won’t be long before the ROP comes knocking on Dubais door with all those kuffar westerners in bikini’s on their beaches like in Bali. While the UAE is probably the best thing that could possibly happen to the middle east to help drag it out of the 12th century, it won’t be long before the Islamderthals turn their eye to it.
You couldn’t get me to go to the top of that building if you gave it to me.
lol
Bikini's are already happening. They have beaches for Europeans - and you can buy booze - again, it you're not a Muslim.
Europe's Florida is the UAE.
